I've been listening to MAG 6: Squirm and MAG 22: Colony again a few times and been thinking about who, or what, Jane Prentiss is (and if that's how you spell her surname, I feel like it should be Prentice).
It seems clear to me that there's no telepathic link between her and the worms that she is host to: she did not react when Martin crushed one, so it seems less likely, although it's possible she was too far away to do anything about it.
It's possible that Jane Prentiss is just a husk now, controlled by some central queen worm. This feels likely, although it still seems to be able to communicate through text message, so I don't think that Jane is completely gone, again suggesting a symbiotic connection between the two.
We also know that Jane was a practicing witch, which opens a few threads of thought:
Firstly, does this mean that the worms are some kind of demonic or supernatural entity? It *feels* like they are just some kind of parasite, as long as we assume they're not psychically linked to Jane. I'm inclined to believe that they are parasitic worms, rather than something arcane or esoteric.
Secondly, does this mean there's some link between Jane Prentiss and one of the cults that we've seen mentioned (the closed and opened stylised eyes suggest two different witch-like cults, see MAG 25: Growing Dark and MAG 9: A Father's Love)? Again, I'm not sure, although this would link up nicely with the idea that the worms might be some sort of demon.
Thirdly, is she actually a witch, or just saying she's one? Again, I guess it depends on the demonic status of the worms.
I had another thought whilst walking home: what if Jane Prentiss has some connection to the "vampires" that Trevor 'The Tramp' Herbert went after in MAG 10: Vampire hunter? I started thinking about it when Martin said that Jane didn't talk, and he wondered if there was something that was blocking her throat, like those 'vampires'. Maybe she's the host, and the worms make people into the vampires if they properly infect a person? This doesn't explain Harriet Li's ending (MAG 6: Squirm), as she exploded into worms, though. Maybe Jane couldn't infect her properly. Or maybe women turn into exploding worm-people, and men turn into those vampires? I know Sylvia McDonald communicated that she was a women, but who knows under the rags that it wore.
Finally, is there some link between them and Gertrude Robinson? Jane clearly seems to know about the Magnus Archives from her text at the end of MAG 22: Colony, could the black tendrils with light from MAG 11: Dreamer be related? I'm more doubtful of this, personally.
What does everyone else think? I'm sure she'll be back at some point. Also, I really think that Martin is infected, which is why Jane left him alone after the fortnight. What do you all think?
