Another thread-necro-ing from me again, hope I don't annoy folks with that. Apart from the old Pong-game and occasional Arcade games from childhood I started actually playing video games when I was 18. Was working in a video store then and finally able to buy a decent PC. By now I play on PC and PS3 (still need to buy a PS4 and my old XBox dusts in a corner in the attic). RPGs were always my favorite, Baldur's Gate; Neverwinter Nights; Planescape Torment; Icewind Dale; and all the other great isometric bunch. Also the Elder Scrolls series. And while my favorite story- and atmosphere-wise is still Morrowind I'm really having fun with my heavily modded Skyrim (even if it crashes every now and then due to the 252 mods >__<). The only thing that makes me really sad about the series is that they reduce the spells with every new game. For an avid caster-player like me that's just awful. T__T The Mass Effect series was also awesome. I like games that force you to make difficult moral choices. And the Witcher series is wonderful too, especially since some seemingly well-meaning choices come back to majorly bite you in the a** later, very fun. Not sure whether to place Dishonored into this category, but the game-play mechanic is rather similar to Elder Scrolls, so... Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I+II were also good. And Revenant; Anachronox; Omikron; Soulbringer and FF VII+ FFXII. ELEX and Hellblade interest me a lot, haven't played them yet, though. Strategy games are also nice, especially Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Don't know how many hours I played this, but the time has probably better be measured in months rather than hours in total. The new more-or-less follow-up Civilization: Beyond Earth is also nice, although the terraforming is less extensive and the Explorers can't be build up to fly and can't cross ice, which idiotically means they can't reach ruins/anything else that is surrounded by ice on the map boarders. *hard eyerolling* A good old one is Deadlock II: Shrine wars, cute aliens and surprisingly hard campaigns. And of course Age of wonders I-III and Dungeon Keeper I+II. Spore was neat too, creating strange critters is fun. Fighting games I enjoyed were the Legacy of Kain series and Jade Empire. And some point-and-click adventures like Grim Fandango and The Wolf Among Us. Then there are games I can't quite place in one category. The Void was amazing and really hard to win without a bunch of re-loading. Veeeery worth it, though! Little Inferno and World of Goo, both can be best described as puzzle, but pretty unique. A game I play rather often is Flight Rising, a browser dragon breeding game. Because pretty dragons, obviously. XD And puzzle games are fun for me in general, match3; wimmelpicture; Mahjong; Osmos; Microcosmum, stuff like that for in between. In general a game has to either have fantasy, sci-fi, horror or a mix of these to really interest me. Humans only in modern day is what I have 24/7 in RL, no need for that in games. As for 0 hour playtime games in the shamefully large Steam library...there are way too many at the moment. <__< Zenith; The Technomancer; Primordia; ENSLAVED-Odyssey to the West; Styx - Master of Shadows; Mars - War Logs; The Age of Decadence; War for the Overworld...>___<

Another great game series I forgot to mention is Dragon Age. And one of the most hilarious, swear word laden, fourth wall breaking games: The Bard's Tale. Was watching a review about underrated games the other day and they talked about one I never even heard about before: Too Human. The producing company faced a massive lawsuit from the creators of the game engine and they tried to destroy every existing copy of it. Of course already sold ones couldn't be taken, but still, since the game wasn't that popular to begin with there may not be too many copies out there. The game can still be played legally, but not sold. It's a real shame! The game-play itself was Hack and slash, which is not really my thing, but the idea behind it is fantastic. Basically they took the Norse-myths and combined them with cyberpunk. The humans of old fought against the machines they created and finally bombed the world into a nuclear winter - the Fimbul-winter. A genetically and technologically enhanced group, the Æsir, gathered the leftover humans and build a city that is the only place mankind can still live in, Midgard. The different types of war-machines still out there are Goblins, Dark-elves, Trolls and Giants. The cyberspace in which several machines can be controlled or manipulated is equated with witchcraft that was seen as woman-work, but wielded by Odin and Loki. (The old word for this was Seidr and the concept would've only been better if they had called it Seidr-space.) Since I couldn't get my hands on the game itself quickly (if ever) I watched a movie-version play-through ( this one). It was planned as a three-parter, so we most likely will never see how he rest was planned. Pity. A game I look forward to is Scorn. Alien/H.R.Giger aesthetic at maximum level. Since I like body-horror and Giger's works this is a wonderful look for a game. XD

hyoscyamus Dragon Age! The Witcher! They are great games. I'd like to read the books that are associated with them as well, but I can never seem to get around to them. Too much on the reading list. I've also played a bit of Mass Effect, but it didn't draw me in in the same way Dragon Age did. Sci-fi doesn't really hold my attention unless it's in a certain style. Other stuff I've loved has been the Fallout series - and I include the first 2 isometric games in that. I think I tend to prefer single-player games in general, so long as it's something I can get myself immersed in. It's for that reason that I typically don't play horror games - not a lot of them can get that bit right, and it's hard to find the good stuff under all the... not good stuff. The good stuff is really good though. Oxenfree, Little Nightmares, INSIDE, and LIMBO were all games I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend. I've come to accept that I just can't play any competitive multiplayer. It's like I'm cursed, anyone and everyone I've ever played with is just too good.

I've come to accept that I just can't play any competitive multiplayer. It's like I'm cursed, anyone and everyone I've ever played with is just too good. The Witcher books are very cool, but a lot different than the games. Definitely worth a read once you find the time. Oh, these games look neat! Wouldn't be for me, though, I'm veeery bad at Jump'nRun games and I need to be able to fight if monsters corner my character, otherwise I get too antsy. 8P Ori and the Blind Forest and Unravel could be interesting for you. Not horror, but the gameplay is similar, especially Unravel. And Fran Bow is a horror game that could be something. Eh, multiplayer is nothing for me either. Not because I'm necessarily bad at it, but because I always fret over maybe screwing up. And this makes it hard for me to join groups for instance runs, which then makes it hard to get the best gear, which then means I often have a high level without being able to compete...bleh. A while back I played Elder Scrolls online and loved the whole thing a lot. Unfortunately I ran into some players who were quite rude and that made me stop playing MMOs altogether. Worst of all was the one who cursed at me for "ruining their quest" when I cast a healing spell on them as they fought against a ghost. I mean, why would someone complain about that? Having help in any form didn't make the quest fail or something. Ah, well. Back to playing alone where I can f*** up however badly without anyone being mad except me. 8P

Necroing x2! Sorry in advance for the long post, but I really love video games. A while back I played Elder Scrolls online and loved the whole thing a lot. Unfortunately I ran into some players who were quite rude and that made me stop playing MMOs altogether. Worst of all was the one who cursed at me for "ruining their quest" when I cast a healing spell on them as they fought against a ghost... Ah, that's awful! I'm so sorry you had such bad experience! If you ever feel like trying out another MMO, I'd highly recommend Guild Wars 2. It's very casual-friendly (no monthly sub fee) and has features which encourage players to actively work together: - All classes have a healing ability
- All players can resurrect other players (there's even an achievement for doing so a certain number of times)
- Any player who damages a mob gets some credit for it, so you can't 'steal' it from someone else just by hitting it first
- Groups aren't required to progress through the main storyline (in the base game)
There are jerks there like anywhere else, but it's one of the few MMOs where I don't routinely turn off zone chat.
I casually play Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy 14, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Warframe*. If any of those tickle your fancy and you want to team up sometime, please send me a message! I promise not to yell at you. *I am utterly terrible at Warframe but something in my soul still longs to be a space ninja. If only there wasn't so much shooting. And jumping. And shooting while jumping.
As for other games, a thousand times yes to all those who mentioned BioWare titles like Dragon Age and Mass Effect. So very bummed Andromeda was panned so heavily that we may never see another ME title. Dragon Age 4, you're my only hope! Not sure what the studio has in mind for the future, but their single-player tittles will always have a place in my heart. The original Knights of the Old Republic was the first game I ever played as a female character and felt like she truly fit into the world. I know BioWare gets mocked for their romances, but I've always felt grateful for *any* content that doesn't assume I'm a straight male.
Also Skyrim is amazing! I'll never finish it because I can't bring myself to pick a faction in the central conflict (hello Fallout 4), but the sheer amount and quality of content from the modding community makes it totally worthwhile to dip in again even years later.
Basically, I'm partial to anything with an interesting story from 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors to The Talos Principle to Gorogoa. So much good stuff out there!

Aah, that's so nice of you, thank you! It was a long list of MMOs where I ran into rude players, TESO was just the one drop in the bucket too much and at a very bad time too. A real shame, this one had so much stuff I loved. Everything looked fantastic, even small bits like cute little frogs and the awesome giant mushrooms from Morrowind and Netches...basically everything beside a lot of the community. Still love my characters, though. First character I make in every TES game is Dunmer, they're my problematic faves. Same in TESO. That and playing mages. One of the others was a bad-ass Shaman-granny. Made her as thick as was possible, she was a big lady like myself. Even got art for her. XD Here are my two idiots: Ouuuh, Warframe sounds like a game I'd be terrible at as well, jumping+shooting. Yes to all you said! My favorite Mass Effect PC was my female Shepard, even though she looked a bit similar to the ship-doctor. BioWare regularly delivers a lot of reason for mockery, but their romances were actually not among these for me either. My mentioned Shepard was with Liara and their story was great. The thing with Tali's face was the worst ever and so much more deserving of all the mockery they got! >___< Ooooh, Skyrim mods! Dangerous to look at once your modded game finally does run (mostly) smooth. Do you have any favorite mods? My latest game was tailored for comfort. With stuff like 'transmute iron ore first' and 'Arod's better containers'. Never without that last one again! Finally I can be the horrible hoarder I am without snail-walking due to exceeded weight limits!

Still love my characters, though.... They look awesome!! I never tried ESO but the graphics look great. Must... resist... playing... I'm afraid it'll take over my life. Heard good things about it though. Glad I never fell for the quarian because wow that backlash was fierce. Wish I'd picked Liara though. Instead I romanced Carth-- er, I mean Kaidan, for the first game then dropped him for Thane. So ME3 was an emotional gut punch even though I should have been prepared for it. And then I romanced Solas in Inquisition because of course I did. Ugh, so bad at picking romances. Oh man, Skyrim mods, where do I even start? I have a bunch of comfort mods too like Multiple Followers, Convenient Horses, and the ones that auto-sort your stuff into containers. SkyUI is amazing. But my favorites are related to game content. Inigo is such an excellent follower mod. I've taken him everywhere and still sometimes hear new dialog. Frostfall is fantastic also. I thought it would be really irritating but there's just enough realism to make things fun without getting frustrating. I also like a mod that lets Thieves Guild members become followers. The Companions are jerks and the mages are snobby. Much rather hang out with the thieves.

More necro! Just thought I'd mention there's a new narrative card-based video game from some of the writers behind Sunless Sea & Fallen London that looks really interesting (particularly for fans of Magnus) called Cultist Simulator. Plus there's a special offer on Steam until tomorrow evening for the game plus lifetime DLC for about £14.

Thanks for the heads up on Cultist Simulator! Missed the Steam sale but picked up the game anyway 'cause it sounds awesome. I enjoy the writing in Fallen London and the Rock Paper Shotgun game review is very positive. Looks fun!

Currently playing Skyrim re-release on the Switch and I am loving it. I didn't get to play this when it originally came out YEARS ago because I've not had a gaming system for quite some time.
I also enjoy the Final Fantasy series and am looking for the re-releases of X and XII on Switch. I enjoy something I can get lost in, with great backstory that feels like a visual book. I have logged hundreds of hours into Final Fantasy XIV on the Ultros server, recently taking a break from it...one because I moved and do not have a desk yet, and I will be back, hopefully, soon.
Back in the original PlayStation days my favorite game was Legend of Dragoon. Ah the memories. And on PC the Myst series had me enthralled.

And holy crap, haven't thought about Legend of Dragoon in forever. I freaking loved that game! Aaand now I feel old.
The last game I finished was Return of the Obra Dinn. It's sort of a murder mystery with neat horror elements and a really nifty black-and-white art style. Definitely recommended.

What kind of character do you play? I was a SCH/RDM for Stormblood, a AST/SCH for Heavensward, and a SCH for A Realm Reborn.

I've played Monk through the whole story. Normally I prefer ranged damage classes but something about the melee combos in FF14 just feels better for some reason. I'm not super great at the class, but it's fun.
There's at least one other FF14 player I've met on the Rusty Quill Discord server. Not sure if you've taken a look there yet. There are some general channels for things like #games-and-gaming in addition to channels for the RQ shows. The community over there is really great, so it might be worth checking out if you enjoy that style of chat.
