What if the creature chasing Michael in the previous episode was Jared from the Bone Turner's Tale? Leads me to wonder if part of the power of the Leitner books is a 2 way transference, giving power to the reader while taking from them. This could explain a few things: 1-Jared's ability to become a "Bone Turner" 2-How Ex Altiora "gained" Michael's scar 3-The obsessiveness with which the readers seek out the Leitner books I wondered that about Jared. It's difficult, because Jared was clearly a man who gained powers, but I feel like Michael was being stalked by some entity that attacked him as a child, giving him his scar. That said, the descriptions do fit together very nicely and that was my first thought when I heard about him. That's a really interesting idea about the 2-way power transference. It feels like Ex Altiora specifically has: 1) Given Jared powers 2) Banished/Absorbed the figure chasing Michael, although it's possible that the book gave Jared the power, and then took it away later on. Also, I say 'powers', I don't think it's magic, I think it's a skill that Jared learnt from the book. Also 200th post, woo!

Dear Lord, that was an affecting episode.
I might be overthinking this, but I have a couple new wild-eyed theories.
Perhaps the hole in the middle of the Graham table is a door to Fractal Land?
"Michael" had to have killed Ivo Lensik's fractal-studying father, right? "All the bones are in his hand," compared with Helen's description of the thing in the fractal hallway having a bulbous hand...
If Not-Sasha and Not-Graham are just different aspects of the fractal entity, then coming to the Magnus Archives was a very very unfortunate choice for Helen, and might be why Michael suddenly appears after Not-Sasha "leaves."

So Michael's laugh doesn't get less creepy on the third listening, just FYI.
Michael tops Jane in the "scariest thing to show up in this podcast" awards. For now.
I'm really enjoying the pay off aspect of this. We know enough about Michael to get a good idea of him. So the sudden audio distortions was a real "oh crap" moment as well as one that was satisfying from a narrative perspective. A strange blend of emotions.
Great balance of horror/mystery/lore in this one.

It's breaking my heart that "Michael" saved Sasha from Jane Prentiss just so he could eat her later in Fractal Land.

I don't think Michael is linked to the Others, but I'm only saying that because if my Others=CircusoftheOther=Breekon&Hope theory is right then we're basically at "Magnus Archives versus the world"

As an aside, it's irking me that there's no info on when the bulk of the events detailed in this statement, so I've had to file them under 2016, since that seems sensible. Any clues I missed?

I have to apologise for my absence, the new year has been a busy one and I haven't had a chance to really sit down and properly listen to the new series of TMA. I have listened to all episodes (and they are all fantastic by the way), I just haven't been able to go as in-depth as I normally do which I feel the Magnus Archives really deserves.
Anyway this episode was great! really un-nerved by the hallway and terrifying... thing waiting at the end.
The main thing I noticed is the Distortion on the tape. Both apparent when "Sasha" and when Michael were talking. I could also hear voices in the background when Sasha and Jon were talking, but that might have been ambient noise of the Archives, Perhaps Tim and Martin talking about what there having for lunch or something.

The background talking is indeed just the institute. As a rule, any time there is a recording during working hours and somebody opens the door it's there.
