Gertrude's voice brings us a starkly relevant tale as The Archivist comes across a fortuitously labelled tape. And we discover that Getrude's own investigations were considerably more advanced in a number of areas... as Jonathan comes to realise that his are somewhat lacking, maybe? At least he's resolved to do... something. But what? And why exactly is NotSasha here now?
A timely story and one that is chilling on a number of levels. Just imagine if someone major in your life had been replaced wholesale and you're the only one who can tell. Or believes that they can tell, because no-one's going to believe you and you don't know if it's your mind failing or playing tricks on you...
It looks like things may be coming to a head in the Archives but what direction are they heading?

Well, that's my carefully-constructed theory in tatters. Back to the oceanic inking-board for this squid.
Poor Sasha.

Oh that was FUN. Love Gertrude. Loved the revelation that she knows far more than Jonathan does about all the eldrich horrors ("aspect of The Stranger!" Heh) and even the significance of magnetic tape. Loved Jonathan's horrified acceptance of the Not-Sasha truth.
All very satisfying indeed.

IT'S HAPPENING. IT'S HAPPENING!
Oh man I'm so excited. And Gertrude is so badass and competent that I'm terrified about how someone or something got into position to murder her in the first place.
I only hope that seasons later, our current Archivist can somewhat approach the level of knowledge and badassery Gertrude possessed.

Right, after significant brooding in the Squidlair, and having re-listened to this statement #3, I realise I've had this backwards ever since Melanie King first clocked Not-Sasha. The question isn't why certain people are immune to the Not Them, it's why the Not Them choose certain people to mess with.
It's obviously possible I'm missing something, but if there is some connecting link between Amy Patel, Melanie, and Lucy Cooper, I'm not seeing it. There's all sorts of links you could dream up that fit any two of them - distance from target, previous supernatural experience, that damned table - but nothing that I can come up with that's a box into which all three women fit. Well, save the fact they are women, and both Rosie and Rose Cooper's neighbours suggest that's not relevant. Plus, even with my finest "smash the patriarchy" hat on I can't see changelings that only men fall for as getting very far in the world.
But what if there is no link between the three women, other than they were the ones the Not Them decided would be most fun to torment? Not-Graham and Not-Rose certainly both seemed to enjoy the squirming of their respective watchers, after all.
The central problem here is the suggestion that the Not-Them have changed their agenda since Lucy gave her statement in the 90s. Gertrude musing aloud that they'd be terrifying if they ever gained a purpose is enough meta-textual evidence on that score, but also it's clear Not-Sasha's behaviour is nothing like Not-Rose's, and Not-Graham arguably doesn't fit Gertrude's understanding of the creatures either. Not-Rose's fun seemed to come from messing with Lucy and then killing Mr Cooper. Not-Graham so far as we know had no bodycount, and was active long after Amy moved away. Not-Sasha is clearly on some kind of mission, and indeed if you wanted a spy inside the archives, I'm not sure any better recruit could exist than one of these... things. Given this shift in behaviour, trying to piece together a coherent theory on these creatures is arguably pointless. We just don't seem to have enough data - ironic given Mr Sims works for an organisation whose acronym is TMI.
Short term, though, I find myself entirely in agreement with Mr Sims. The question that needs answering above all others is how we can kill it.
ETA: Here's a thing to bake your noodles. If I'm wrong, and immunity to the Not-Them's brainwashing isn't the creature(s) being capricious, then whatever property or combination of properties that provides that immunity must be pretty rare. We've never seen more than one person at a time fail to fall for the glamour, and Gertrude suggests that it's never happened to more than two people in her experience.
All of which raises the question: if the immunity is both internal and rare, how many of these things are running around the world with no-one noticing?
(*Smash-cut to Supernatural Villainy HQ, 1983. Several changelings are relaxing around a table playing cards. Changeling Dave bursts into the room.* CHANGELING DAVE: Lads! Lads! We can go back on the hunt. CHANGELING JIMMY: Pipe down Dave, we're busy. Ain't no point heading out. Mix-tapes are rife. The whole damn world is stuffed with boomboxes. It's a magnetic minefield out there. It's Changeling Nam. *Changeling Dave throws a small, shiny object onto the table, sending poker chips flying in all directions. It's a CD.* CHANGELING JIMMY: Unholy crap, Dave. This changes EVERYTHING! Send out for a keg of evil beer, lads! I wanna be out of my skull and into a new identity by midnight! *Loud and sinister cheers*)

Changeling Dave and the war against 8 tracks Who's to say the music industry insider pushing for CD tech adoption wasn't a changeling? "I understand what you're saying, Francis. Tapes have done very well for us over the years. But it's time for a change. BECAUSE NOTHING HAS CHANGED HERE RECENTLY ALL IS AS IT ALWAYS WAS. I just really like these compact discs, you know? They're so shiny. I can see my face in them. THE FACE I HAVE ALWAYS HAD."
