OR: "Facing your fears"
NOTE: The correct casefile number for this episode is #0141010 and not 0153007. (The details given by Gertrude as to the statement date are the right ones.)
The Archivist's pen pal has seen fit to deliver the words of his predecessor this week, and we learn quite a bit more about Gertrude and her 'recent' endeavours with the mysterious forces out there. Coming face to face with representatives of The Stranger has certainly not paid off well for most folks, though... Plus we have the Lightless Flame thrown in for good measure. And does it mean anything that Georgie can hear the strange music too?
So, just what was Gertrude up to, that means she was still hurting? Maybe this ties into the events we heard of in 'Crusader' but will The Archivist start playing with fire himself?
So many questions but at least we do get some revelations along the way... where will the red string lead us next?
Addendum: Thanks to all you keen-eyed/eared listeners for catching the case number issue. Apologies - there was an error on our recording spreadsheet. We've updated the shownotes where we can and it will show correctly on the transcript.

This was a very interesting episode again! And basically confirms that Gertrude was actually going against emissaries of other powers herself instead of just filing away information to then send others against them. A part of the job that's maybe expected from the Archivist? Would fit with Elias' remark about Jon needing to leave the "save nest" eventually. The way the statement describes not noticing details was relatable for me. I have a hard time noticing things that aren't interesting for me as well. One time I remembered what color the car of my (at that time) best friend had for three years only weeks before she got another. And I never remember to congratulate people on their baby unless someone else does it. On the other hand I notice details others often don't, so that's at least something. Ah, well. -__- That doesn't say good things about me, but I have to admit the way our Archivist reacts when afraid and in shock is far more amusing to me than it should be. It's easy to imagine his internal screaming through the stammering. Oddly cute and fun, especially since it's one of the moments we see the, in truth, too soft underbelly of someone who often carried himself as aloof cynic. Can't wait to see whether he'll be actually able to fight and destroy whatever he comes across next or whether someone else has to save him. So far it was always someone else. Wouldn't surprise me if he goes against enemies with one motivation being to defend Georgie only to be rescued by her in the end. XD Also Georgie's reaction to everything here was great fun as well! You all are splendid in writing strong, intelligent women into the stories and her protective, sober attitude is nice. Like Melanie she's most likely far more ready to believe what's going on than Jon thinks. She does have a mystery podcast after all. And Melanie's findings to back some things up. Anyway, great episode as usual!

What was the term he used in the statement - flincing? Flintsing? I’ve never heard it before and was wondering about it. Great episode! I love Wednesday nights - it means I get my Magnus Archives fix!

Let me just take the time to repeat something I'm sure I've said before.
GERTRUDE IS SUCH A BADASS.

Have added a note to the first post, covering the mixup with the casefile numbers. Sorry for that folks!

My interpretation of this is the Stranger is trying to build humans. Or atleast a facsimile of them in which to hide its servants. If we assume the students from MAG34 were both late stage prototypes and advanced scouts I think it's safe to say he's gotten jolly close. I also think this ties in MAG1, 28, 34, 44, 54, 83 maybe MAG5 at a push with the doll heads but that's a red string stretched a touch too far. It makes me wonder if Breekon and Hope are sole servants of the Stranger as they appear in a lot of these, or are hinted at such. If they are then the above list needs to be much longer.
What interests me is the Lady with the fire tattoo, up to now I viewed her as a necassery evil. Clearing an infested nursing home with a fellow hunter, engaging in a ritual to presumably bind a dangerous spirit in Oxford, and membership in a cult directly opposed to that which is into some well freaky shit. What the hell is she up to?

A nasty thought occurs, could this be where all the people who enter the coffin(s) end up?
*shudder*

My interpretation of this is the Stranger is trying to build humans. Or atleast a facsimile of them in which to hide its servants. If we assume the students from MAG34 were both late stage prototypes and advanced scouts I think it's safe to say he's gotten jolly close. Leitner said the different powers were beings who lived rather next to the world than in it and Mary Keay said big changes were coming. So my interpretation was that the Unknowing is supposed to bring the Stranger itself closer or into the world. And I always wondered about the students. A lot of people seem to agree they belong to the Stranger ilk, but my first thought was they were vampires who tried to blend in better. And to me the vampires would be a better fit for Butchery. Hmm, still not sure. True. Although they could also work for various powers. Mary Keay made it rather clear that she made use of artifacts by whomever and found it dumb to just serve one entity. The idea of a yellow page variant for artifacts and creature transporters amuses me. And then there's Mikaele Salesa who was in possession of several artifacts and sold them. He seemed to know what exactly the things he sold do, which makes me think he is/was, like Mary, not in league with a single entity, but makes use of whatever he finds. Or was used by powers to spread their artifacts around. I personally would attribute the coffin to the End or Butchery again, but who knows? Anyway, I reckon things will get quite bloody soon. I mean...we were promised nasty things in the Q+A!

What with there OTT cockney accents and detective daisy describing them as feeling like their made out of hard leather, I interpret them as being what someone who has had a delivery driver described to them as and tried to build one to be more incognito. It fits closer in with the narrative of what I feel the Stranger is trying to do
The vampires are an interesting one, they don't fit neatly as others do in the respective realm or theme of any of the entities described yet. If we were to break them down to their core idea I think it would be predation, their sole purpose seems to be to blend in and feed, butchery does some to be the closest fit but I think the modus operandi goes in different directions, they just seem too subtle for it, you know? Hiding in plain sight instead of just going balls to the wall with a carving knife
I think the distinction here is that Mary Kaey and Michaela Silesa (bad spelling abound) are human entities with the ability to choose whilst breekon and Hope are not and are pigeonholed to their respective diety (if they can be described as such)
But I trust the archives to throw more mess into the mix to keep us all guessing

Even if they are products of the Stranger they might still work for several powers, though. If the Lightless Flame servants works together with the Stranger servants sometimes, as it seems now, then there probably were other short-term alliances now and then. Hmm, depends. Predation is a very good term for the core purpose of the vampires (as well as the werewolf), but they are only subtle in the beginning to lure the prey in. The feeding itself is pretty violent and messy, so that would fit again. He, speculating about which creatures are servants of which entity is fun. I'm very excited to learn where they belong to someday.
