This is how we roll (aka, "the dice made me do it!")

We've seen some outstanding times when the dice really know what's going on and manipulate the game, to the point you may question their sentience (especially as far as Bertie is concerned). I thought it would be funny to discuss the times that's happened, either in RQG or in your own games.
Reason for this is because something that's worth sharing happened just last night. I'll make it as quick as permissible:
Characters: Lamis (very short 5'3" half elf sorcerer female) and Merope (6'5" hulking half orc monk female) have found each other after not meeting for a number of years. They're childhood friends. Lamis is mostly apathetic to everything, and Merope is heavily disciplined and quiet, but has a huge crush on Lamis and has for most of her life.
Merope has to complete a quest given by her employer to retrieve something from a dungeon. No biggie. Lamis will tag along because it is less troublesome if Merope finishes her tasks quickly, so they can go about their business. She otherwise could care less and would balance staying at an inn almost equally to going to some dark dungeon. Off they go and defeat some minor monsters, where Merope is just one hitting all the small fries and Lamis really doesn't have to do much. Then they reach a waterway. There's something across. Lamis draws the line there, as she has a -1 swim check and refuses to go through, but Merope is trying to show off a little, and she decides to go in. The current isn't particularly fast or aggressive. She immediately rolls a 1. She slips and falls, quickly sinking 10ft. Lamis is inconvenienced, and waits for her to resurface, but Merope fails her swim check twice. Lamis yells at her that she better come up right this moment, and somehow, Merope rolls a 20 after hearing Lamis' voice. (I suspiciously inspect the dice.) Merope gets her bearings, shoots right up, and surfaces. Lamis helps her to shore as much as permissible, considering Merope weights almost 3 times Lamis' weight. As they're getting back up, a tentacle quickly surfaces, Merope fails both her reflex save not to be held and her fortitude safe not to be dragged, and is brought back 10ft under water with a monster that does not understand the concept of personal space.
Lamis panics, which is unusual for her. She gets the conveniently placed treasure she got two rooms back and planned to sell because she deemed it useless (a wand with 5 charges of magic missile), and dives in. She does well on her swim check and can react. 5 rounds later, Merope not only managed another critical failure, but did not succeed on ANY of her checks. None. Lamis managed to bring the monster down with only 1 charge to spare, and did not fail any of her swim checks. No 20's though. Monster goes down, and now they both struggle trying to get up. Lamis seems to have exhausted her energy and is rolling horribly, unable to break surface and about to drown. Merope remains failing for another 2 rounds, and as Lamis is about to drown, Merope hits a natural 20, bringing them both to safety.
For flavor, the scene ended as they're both gasping for air and going to the opposite shore. Lamis gets up, dries herself and walks past Merope without looking at her or saying a word. Merope is profusely apologizing and throwing up excess water. Lamis gets Merope's favorite hat which ended up ashore a little ways away, puts it on Merope's head, and tells her that they should make a fire and dry off.
None of this was even planned. It was supposed to be a quick in, drag monster out, get it done deal, yet it ended up being a very good scene overall. It isn't even the boss. Lamis is not supposed to be the hero on the least. How a -1 swimmer suddenly outdid a +3 swimmer in an underwater battle is beyond me. Those dice have been moved to the "you know too much" bin for now.
What's your favorite dice intervention?
PS: Sorry for the title, Alex.
