OR: "After the battle is lost"The literal horrors of war this week. And we hear tell of 'war ghosts', perhaps the same as alluded to by Melanie. Are they deserters or they simply haunted by forces beyond their ken - seeing terror beyond that of the battlefield itself? And does this relate in any way to the events of 'The Piper' (MAG007)? Italy during World War II wasn't the most stable of places, so it's not surprising that its armed forces might experience symptoms of fatigue... And poor, dear Martin - this recording really does seem to shake him. He does appear to spook easily, doesn't he? And what of Basira - managing to conceal herself in plain sight without being spotted. The mark of a well-trained ex-police officer, perhaps? This is certainly the first episode where the transcript is going to have footnotes - so if you're wondering about any of the Italian used here, stay tuned for that. Also - just to reiterate on what Alex said: We're sorry that we're having to take a season break but we really need to catch up with some of the production issues, take a bit of breather to plan out the rest of Season 3 and the story going forward. And MAG100 seems the appropriate point to do so. Don't worry - we have content planned for the break, so your feeds will not be empty, whistling expanses of audio ghosts... And we've got some exciting news coming tomorrow, of particular interest for those of you with a creative streak

Also - just to reiterate on what Alex said: We're sorry that we're having to take a season break but we really need to catch up with some of the production issues, take a bit of breather to plan out the rest of Season 3 and the story going forward. The break announcement was the worst horror part of the episode. Jokes aside, better to do this than a drop in quality. Take the time you need. The connection to The Piper interests me as well, especially because the 'corpses' seemed to sing. So this power apparently has a connection to music. The war related episodes are very well written, they describe the horror and desolation of the war splendidly. And yes, poor Martin. *pet-pet* But his reaction is definitely interesting. He's not made of Archivist-material. Too sensitive to experience too much of the true statements, even though he does good readings. Basira continues to be awesome and very practical! As a a voracious reader she fits quite nicely in the Archive. (Her stealthy reading confirms her as the Rogue of the party, isn't it? XD) (I can relate to her deep immersion while reading. Once I was standing in a group of my co-workers and read an article. It was noisy around me, but the text was interesting enough to completely shut out everything around me. Until everyone was laughing. One of them had repeatedly asked me a question that I hadn't heard and was pissed about me 'ignoring' him personally. Everyone was laughing about it and I had to ask a few times what was funny. He woudn't believe me that I had shut out the noises around me so much that I really didn't hear him. He even refused to repeat his question again. I still don't know what it was. >__<)

Jokes aside, better to do this than a drop in quality. Take the time you need. 100% agree. Quality (and sanity of staff!) over quantity please. Seems that way! Makes me wonder what happened to the drummer boy. It's interesting he and Antonio and Luca were the last ones standing. I've no idea if that's because they were better suited to confront the deserter or if it was all random. Maybe Death just rolled some dice to decide which person died next. The End does seem to favor games of chance. The slow crawl through the tunnel of corpses was really scary. The first time I listened, I was scared for Luca, but the second time through I was more afraid for the deserter. If Luca's father's story is to be believed, the deserters literally eat what they are so terrified of becoming. In the cave, Luca seemed to represent Death, arriving at last. That image of the clear-eyed corpses made me wonder if the deserter could see through them somehow? If he could see death approach but was unable to stop it? Side note: Why did the first soldier to die take five minutes to finally fall to the ground? Was the moment of his death stretched out somehow? Or was that just the creepiest way possible to get everyone's attention? Martin is sensitive yes, but I think he's more Archivist-material than any of the other assistants right now. Tim didn't even make it through the whole statement in 'Tucked In' so Melanie read that one. But Martin's done all the rest in Jon's absence: 'Possessive', 'Dig', 'Body Builder', and now 'Absent Without Leave'. He didn't sound so fatigued reading them in the beginning, but I don't think Jon did either at the start of season 1. Perhaps recording the statements has a cumulative effect? I imagine reliving someone's fear is emotionally exhausting, but maybe there's more to it than that. They are essentially coming into contact with the Eye right? Maybe brushing up against something supernatural has a physical effect all its own, changing them a bit. For example, can Jon compel people purely because of his title as the Archivist? Could he have used it from day one if only he'd known about it? Or did that power manifest and grow stronger over time from repeated exposure to the Eye through reading/witnessing statements? Martin isn't the Archivist, but maybe continuing to record will change him in some way too? (Stop reading statements Martin!) Ha ha, I thought rogue too! Basira is great! I'm looking forward to hearing more from her. Also: alchemy? That's really interesting! (I'm guilty of the same thing with immersive reading. Comes in extremely handy when you're stuck on a plane beside two drunk dudes on their way to a bachelor party though. )

Odd note: This episode includes dead who are not. Previous included the living who were not.

Odd note: This episode includes dead who are not. Previous included the living who were not. That's an excellent observation! We've seen corpses behaving like living people (the lady mending the shirt) and living people behaving like corpses (the unmoving folks sprawled in the university building). Kind of calls into question what 'death' actually means. It also makes the End that much more frightening. I'm used to supernatural fiction portraying death powers (like necromancy) with tight restrictions on the literal death part. That people in Magnus can be influenced by Death while still having a heartbeat is... not comforting.

Eh, well, I was more thinking along the line of being willing to experience the statements in this way. Jon had a lot of awful feelings and experiences from reading, yet he never complained about this happening and went for more of them. Even after knowing what it did to him and why this happened. Martin on the other hand dislikes doing it. Right now, I think Melanie would be a better Archivist than Martin, personality-wise. But as long as the Archivist position is filled they don't have to be too worried about it yet. Probably. The more I think about it the more I think Martin would make a good Healer for the group. But Jon needs better rolling-skills, the guy had a lot of 1s in bad situations. XD Not!Sasha chasing him - critically fails his stealth-check - screams at the terrifying monster to shut up. Knows the Lightless Flame lot burn everything - critically fails sense motive - yeah, sure, lets shake haAAaaAAARGH. XD[/quote]
