OR: "Small Talk & Large Feet"I think were going have to start handing out hankies in the vestibule of Rusty Towers along with the red string and corkboards. Some really excellent emotional roleplaying on display here, coupled with severe tonal whiplash as we jump between the third-best receiving room and the family parlours. Alex seems to have a lot to answer for #ButWeRespectHisCraft. Family encounters, particularly in grief, are not easy things to navigate and it seems Hamid's brother is in more trouble than just the family banking misfortunes. And couple this with three somewhat less than tactful folk with their own worries and outlooks on death - however soon that may be - and you have a rather fragile cocktail. So, of course, the answer is make it more volatile with alcohol. Lydia's comment of Azu being "glowing pink discretion" is probably one of my favourite lines of recent time. Also, I was literally biting my arm during some of the beautifully cringey, foot-in-mouth scenes over lifespan during my preview listen And now we just have the actual funeral to get through. That's going to be fine, right...

Grizzop, Sasha and Azu managed to get to a really awkward point in this episode, it made me really cringe at times. And a drunk Sasha with magical daggers may not be the best combination.
And I pity Hamid: Not only does he face a lot of family drama, his friends do not seem to be a lot of help at the moment for him.
But I am really looking forward seeing what comes out with Barrett and Hamid. I am sure there will be no ramification for his decision 😉.

I burned dinner listening to this. Having not long ago gone through losing a parent and all the navigating of weird family crap that comes with it (yay for exceedingly dysfunctional families) this whole thing made me laugh and cringe in so much emotional horror... brilliant and evil and I cannot stop giggling. But my kids were not as pleased that I managed to get so into listening I burned the brown rice and summer squash.

I also pulled out some actual moonshine for husband and I after the burned dinner because if you have it, drink it.

Bit of an emotional rollercoaster, this one! And a bit extra hard-hitting, given that we're scattering my grandfather's ashes tomorrow. Tears of laughter and regular tears in equal measure, really, and a welcome catharsis. I was pretty damn grateful that the break came when it did, because I once again made the foolish decision to listen in public and I was losing it entirely by that point. I would apologize to the staff at my grocery store for the strange woman muffling her laughter with one hand while bracing herself on the freezer door with the other, but I think they're probably used to me by now. Fortunately I was out of the store by the time we got to Lydia's horrified little "Oh my god" at the thought of Azu trying to comfort Sasha, because that was the point where I was no longer able to muffle anything.
I hope that Grizzop and Azu get to have more comparative religion talks, hopefully under less fraught circumstances, because oh my god that is so my jam. I absolutely want to know what their respective cults' positions on various issues are, and where they align and where they differ! I want to know how their faith works in day-to-day life, and how they each came to theirs! I minored in Religious Studies and have worldbuilt entire fantasy societies as an excuse to create pantheons for them; I want to know everything. (And a couple recent comments from Grizzop have led me down the rabbit hole of wondering if the Artemis lot has an official Opinion on sex and chastity.) That said, I did love the fraught-ness of this particular discussion, and its resolution! This show so often makes me wish I had the patience to draw, and the tableau of Sasha drunkenly flipping knives while Azu cuddles the unconscious servants is way up there on the list of reasons why. Hamid walking in on all that should be the new 'Troy returning with pizza' reaction image.
I continue to worry for Hamid. I'm sure there's a perfectly... well, let's say 'reasonable' and know that it doesn't apply to anything about the situation, but a reasonable explanation why Barrett wasn't responding -- probably just that Hamid doesn't know how/isn't allowed to initiate communication from his end -- but the distrusting part of me worries that Barrett is deliberately staying silent until Hamid offers more than he already has. But on a happier note, I loved everything with Saira and can't remember the last time I felt as vindicated on a character's behalf as when she immediately blamed Gideon for getting him kicked out.

I love hearing people's reactions to episodes like this one. There's so much in it! I'm really glad people are responding to it in the way we hoped they would.

Not only how those religions do see things in Greek mythology, but what Grizzop and Azu make from that on their own. Because everyone has their own personal turn in religious beliefs. So I am looking forward to see how that turns out and how they explain their beliefs. So hopefully they will have more of those discussions, but maybe in a more appropiate setting .

I'll just add my own thanks to the RQ gang for such an emotional rollercoaster of an episode. I'm starting to listen to the episodes starting from 0, and it's amazing how everybody's changed since that introductory meta-cast.

I can't even quite believe how different my life was back in 2015, it's been a pretty wild 3 years.

I listened to this part-way through my 10 hours in uni yesterday and had to stop for a good 10 minutes so I didn't sob audibly in the studio.
From tomorrow I'm planning on re-listening to season 2 to get me through deadline week.

Having mainlined the podcast over about 10 days (yes, really) I don't think there's been a worse point to say "I am up to date" than this! A whole week until all this genuinely squirm-inducing awkwardness can be resolved!
Hamid's family being almost as messed up as his ability to sense motive, having two representatives of the gods discussing death in a grieving house with an undead moderator, the constant discomfort of the household staff... This was an Episode. I'm surprised Sasha's handling the sand timer getting so low and her literally doing nothing about it right now so well, especially with Grizzop's constant reminders that life is short (again, in a grieving household!) and then Hamid coming in to Moonshine Aftermath was just... wow. And I hope you all bought poor Bryn a pint for his need to be constantly emotionally raw of late!

Barrett did say it's his communication device - more than likely the line's only open when he wants it.
