So. The secret is out. Someone spotted it in another thread. Brutor is ALL of the meritocrats.
Campaign over.

Right! We've just passed through Zolf's mini-arc and learnt a lot about his backstory.
He's a former sailor, who became a pirate when his ship was wrecked with few survivors - none of whom really want to talk about it. There are hints of some monstrous sea creature being involved.
He became a Poseidon cultist sometime after he ended his service in the navy, but his time as a pirate is still rather unclear so his Clericiness may have come through his piracy or may have come in his redemption from that life.
I found it interesting that the authorities didn't want to press him further, considering that they had a good idea what his life after the sinking of his ship must have been. Perhaps they know much more about the causes of that sinking, and would prefer to keep that secret? If that were the case then they'd be tacitly relieved that Zolf isn't revealing embarrassing details (either because he doesn't know them, or because he's wise enough to keep his mouth shut).
So why would they be coy about the circumstances of that sinking? Is there some kind of threat they have little chance of defeating? Some high level intrigue and covering of publicly respected arses? Whatever the reason - if they ARE covering something up, Zolf is going to be kept in their pocket as much as is possible and if we continue to see bureaucrats getting all up into his business I'd suggest that means some grand scheme or conspiracy at higher and higher levels.
Even the seeming antipathy between the Navy and the Cult of Poseidon could be explained away if it's a Meritocrat pulling strings to keep this pesky survivor off balance...

Although (I would hope) I know a little more about this than you, there's definitely an element of mystery in it for me too. I reckon you're right about the potential connection between the monstrous thing causing the storm and the naval shipwreck, but at this point I'm as clueless as you... only Alex holds the answer to that.

Listening back to the courtroom evidence I don't think a monstrous being was mentioned after all - it came across more like a ship firing on you in fog or otherwise unseen. Which is mysteriouser. But yes, in such little backstory hooks the art of developing your character through roleplay is found.

Hello Barkeep, one of your finest... liquids please!
I had a theory that this might have something to do with the people who made the Simulacrum (Sp?) or perhaps the people who stole it?
That was the reason for them to go to France after all wasn't it? (in a round about way). Its been a while since it was brought up but I thought it might make sense with all the fancy technology and robotic arms in the ceiling.

I thought that too. Almost as if Mr. Ceiling may turn out to be a copy of the Simulacrum.
Though I'm ultimately going for Brutor in a mechanical exoskeleton.
