Okay, so, firstly, I want people to watch this video (which I'm aware is all sorts of horrible quality)
We all caught up? Okay:
In this post, I will present my case that Father Burroughs (of MAG 19/20) was "marked" by the Fractal, rather than a demon known as Mentis (as was often assumed).
Firstly - my evidence as seen in the video. Burroughs was not familiar with Latin beyond his sermons, and it is thus conceivable that he wouldn't notice the unusual spacing of letters if half of a word was obscured (and, lets be honest, who would act perfectly calmly under those circumstances?)
Secondly - Both Bethany O'Connor and Burroughs showed a disconnect between their actions and what they thought was occurring. If we jump forward to MAG80, Leitner has this to say on the Spiral:
Does this not sound EXACTLY like how Burroughs and O'Connor were tortured?
There are other, more tenuous bits of evidence - that the word Mentis was found in "a long, thin bedroom" (almost corridor like?), that Burroughs describes the streets of Oxford during his two-year bender as being "winding", and the man that helped him in the Church is described as having "thin, bony arm", but I think I've fuelled the discussion enough.
Another thing that cropped up was a very specific usage of the word "marked". Consider:
and
Marked here is specifically being used to mean "having encountered one of the Powers and lived". Interesting, no?

That one is part of a
power that my assistant Domingo used to call
“Esmentiaras”, which I believe translates as ‘it is
lies’ or ‘it is lying’. At the time, of course, we just
used it as a way to classify books. I call it the
Spiral. It deals in fooling the senses, in making
you see and hear things that are not there, in drawing you into mazes and making you doubt your own sanity.

Something else answered
my call for protection. I felt my lips move. They
made no sound that I could hear, but I felt them form every syllable. “I am not for you. I am marked.”

Only a few escaped with their life and mind intact, and even then they were deeply marked.
