That we know of. But we have no idea if things were done behind the scenes as it were. But he I believe retained the use of languages after the "death" of Mr. Ceiling so there's room for questions. Oh... there is also the whole side quest and potential impact there? My theory always was his finding of the circlet of command enabling him to do so. He never put it on though? And as I recall, when Alex's character from the side quest put it on (yes i have forgotten his name), all it seemed to do was make him seem more attractive? We never really got the mechanical effects of it though.

Alex's character was named Edward Keystone. And I just assumed that it is still the circlet and never questioned it any further. lego you let me question so many things I thought about for a short while, formed a theory about it and then just told myself "that sounds right, let's go with this". And I really like you making me question that all over again.

Ah! I can't believe I forgot Edward! I've never really formed theories about anything i've watched/listened to before, but i think rusty quill has just become so big in my life so quickly, i don't want it to leave. I'm halfway through my 3rd relisten, because I just dont want to stop listening, and that means that i am picking up on a lot of things i missed last time around.

I know that feeling. I listened to all episodes four times back to back in two months. And you start to pick up a lot of things.
What I was just thinking about though: If Mr. Ceiling is responsible for Bertie speaking French, should it not have been gone after they distroyed Mr. Ceiling? And should not have been the contract removed from his brain? Because the other mind alternating things he did to everyone where gone (Sasha was able to remember her first meeting with Francois Henry and Brutor remembered the rooftop-incidence.).

I've been thinking about this a bit, cause I was wondering how Mr Ceiling actually altered the memories.
1. He actually did something physical. Problems:- that's incredibly impractical, especially on the scale he was doing it. - how come that reverted after he was destroyed
2. He used some form of magic - this would make more sense with the whole reverting thing, but Mr Ceiling explicitly states that he can't do magic. I suppose he could just not know what he was doing was magic, but he was not unintelligent, just amoral
Also, given that the affect of the contract on Bertie was so much more pronounced than any of the other affects Mr Ceiling had, and that he woke up covered in blood, that might have been a more physical, and more permanent affect.
Finally, I don't personally think that Mr ceiling would have necessarily done anything other than what Bertie asked, and if he did decide to make Bertie speak French, as an improvement, cause he's not opposed to doing that (see Zolfs leg) then I feel like he would have done even more, or at least told Bertie what he had done.

The contract may have been something more physical, but why should speaking French be something more physical? So why did it stay after Mr. Ceiling was destroyed and his other effects vanished? That is the reason why I am still leaning to the circlet of command as being the reason for Berties language capabilities.

There's no particular reason for it to be more physical, but if it happened at the same time, there might not have been any reason for it to not be physical. To be honest, I don't particularly think it was Mr Ceiling, but for other reasons.
The only thing with the circlet of command is that he's not wearing it, and I don't think he ever has. Also, so far most magical items only seem to affect the wearers when they're wearing them.

That is true but it was the only thing I could come up with as an explantion for myself. When I was aondering about it before I did not think about Mr. Ceiling for a second.

To be fair I don't have any real explanations myself

I can't remember at exactly which point it happens, so I may have my timeline a little wrong. But this is what I think happened:
This was an in game justification of a mechanical quirk. When leveling up you can just put points into linguistics, which gains you languages. James wanted to gain points in this, because it's also the skill you role to make legalistic arguments etc. IC Bertie would never study a foreign language, so how to justify his unexpected acquisition of them, a side-effect of the contract dump!
The contract insertion was indeed a more permanent form of magic than the memory alteration. And the memory alteration was magic, even if Mr Ceiling claimed it couldn't do magic - i think it was just wrong, and the magic wore off on the death of the caster.

Okay, thank you for clarifying that. I really cannot see Bertie studying a foreign language, that would just have been wrong in my eyes.
