OR: "Knowing insects"
We pay a return visit to the space station Daedalus (first heard of in MAG057 Personal Space) and hear from Jan Kilbride, representative of the Fairchilds aboard the station. And it seems the vastness of it all may have invoked heavenly terrors and suggestions of something else being out there, between the stars, in the gulf, an immensity far beyond the mere workings of the human mind. Maybe Jan wasn't quite as cut out for being an astronaut as he thought he was...
Although, this isn't the first time we've heard his name. Gertrude obviously thought there was something to him and his experience - even going so far as knowing he was up there and having her suspicions (MAG099 Dust to Dust). All in all a nice ep to return the 'cosmic' to the 'cosmic horror' genre.
But then we come to Melanie. She seemed to get into the reading of that statement quite bit, right? And we get some nice gossip about the day-to-day lives of our assistants - though I'm not sure if it's comforting or disturbing to know that Daisy is an avid fan of The Archers (a long-running British rural radio drama/soap). And performance reviews are perfectly natural as part of most jobs... but then, Elias isn't your average boss. And he does appear to be brutally efficient in wielding his knowledge, though as productivity tools goes, maybe we can liken its effectiveness to that of a pipe? And who would have guessed that Melanie had another tie to the supernatural, than just getting shot by a ghost...
Kudos to Jonny, Ben & Lydia for an astounding performance at the end there - I was physically shaking by the time the credits rolled.

I know its super not what the episode was about, but I really appreciate there being a canon ace-spectrum character!
And Lydia's performance was brilliant!

The writing and voice acting of this episode was even more amazing than the usual brilliance. While everything was great, Melanie and Elias’ interaction at the end gutted me. Applauding, kudos, high fives, etc.

All in all a nice ep to return the 'cosmic' to the 'cosmic horror' genre. Excellent existential horror this episode! Hopefully we get Manuela's statement in the future too. Also loved the conversation/gossip between Melanie and Basira. Nice to enjoy a more lighthearted moment, though short-lived.
That was so heart-wrenching!!
Interesting you referenced pipe-wielding because Leitner's actual murder didn't affect me nearly as much. It was incredibly difficult listening to Melanie suffer like that. Ugh, and the bit at the end when Elias pronounces her job performance 'satisfactory' like he didn't just torture someone.
Yes, she tried to murder him and maybe his goals ultimately serve the greater good, but I don't care. I hope that monster meets a very unpleasant end. Preferably before any more 'performance reviews'.

DAMN!!!! That last few minutes!!!! COLD is not the word! Monstrous? Heartless, soulless, inhumanly sadistic? Words fail me. I had NO idea that he could be.... that! The sort of monster who would have volunteered to work at the death camps of WW II and set up an observation deck with snacks and drinks on hand!
