OR: "No smoke without"From the UK to the USA, and the Archivist is hot on the supposed trail of Gertrude and Gerard. Chicago, to Pittsburgh, and then onto Washington... only dogged footsteps become tired ones when you don't take care of yourself, or the one who looks out for you, it seems. But at least there is further confirmation that Gerard did pass away here. Tunnel fires and interrogations, seems like there are lots of questions to be asked - not least when a strange woman accosts you on the bus and you find out there's an old man in the boot of her car. Yes, this is the week we get the Trevor Ex Machina that many of you had already expected. On the heels of last week's Ivy Meadows name drop we get the man himself, surprisingly hale after supposedly dying of lung cancer, and his companion turns out to be none other than the daughter of darkness, Julia Montauk! But what are they doing in the USA and why kidnap the Archivist? And what is John hoping to find at the Usher Foundation? And just what was Gertrude up to when Gerard succumbed to his illness? Inspector Sands to the red string repository...

Very fun hearing from Julia and Trevor! Can't wait to see what the trio does next, even if it includes axe-murdering Mustermann. Kinda hard to feel sorry for him if Mr. Ewing's statement is anything to go by. Hopefully Gertrude did something to make Gerard undead (or whatever happened to Mary Keay). Can't say I've ever wished that on a character before, but I'll gladly take Zombie Gerard over Fully Dead Gerard.
So Jon couldn't get through to Melanie. Not surprising I guess. Hang in there Melanie! Also, excellent work from the sound folks! Especially regarding the traffic stop. Even without dialog it's very clear what's happening from the audio clues like the turn signal, tires and footsteps over gravel, window tapping, and the rest. It flows together so naturally that I didn't consciously notice all of the different pieces till the second listen. Very cool!

Suffice to say, it's probably one of the most challenging eps the editing team have had to work on this season

A-grade pun in this week's title. Personally I'd have gone for "Sick Burn" myself, but then I'm from the Garth Marenghi school of writing. Subtlety, like subtext, is for cowards.

Oh no, the voice definitely showed up. If you're still pondering, examine how the cop introduced themself ;-)
