Some very interesting historical records are unveiled this week in a misfiling(?) from the Deep Archives. Presumably this is a letter written to the Magnus Institute founder and by someone who knew him well - I wonder if the genealogical reveal we get at the end has more direct ramifications than we were hitherto aware of. A personal grudge, mayhaps? We shall see... which brings us round to the matter of the eye symbol cropping up again.
I should give special mention as well to the accidental interruption by Martin - little things like this add so much to the characterisations and help ground the story :-)

Really liked this one! although I wasn't looking forward to any being written in a forest, as that is my natural habitat now a days! thankfully I don't go surveying in them at night!
When it was described that the crypt was filled with books I immediately thought it was going to be Lightners Library, but once the books were described as rotting, thought maybe not. Although I do think that book he picked up was in Sanskrit, not Arabic.
I absolutely loved the interruption, it made me jump out my skin when the door opened, and Sims saying "martin!" got me thinking martin had been possessed, I completely forgot he was living in the institute, and making himself at home it seems.
Sims didn't seem as annoyed at the misfiling of this one, not like when he read 'The Piper', perhaps he's now seeing a pattern?

I'm wondering if Gertrude deliberately left a trail so that in case anything happened to her (as it obviously did), her successor could follow the breadcrumbs and maybe figure out what's going on. It does feel like we're coming across things in some kind of order...

It does feel like we're coming across things in some kind of order... Holy crap! I never thought about it like that... That would be really interesting. Quickly! Back to the cork board! It would make sense, though, I wondered why certain things kept recurring, like all the Gerard Kaey information stuff. But then, that means that Gertrude read about her death (from 'Dreams') and then put it in some order in the 5 or so days she had left to live for her replacement. I felt like this one was a slow burner, was good for the background on Gerard and for a different tone to most of the other cases. I thought we might have had something on Jane Prentice, or similar, but maybe this will all come together with Gerard being Jane's father, or something.

Perhaps we will get a statement from Gertrude at some point? possibly written a day or so before her death?
Witches is becoming a recurring thing, with Johan von Vertenburg (sp?) known to keep company with witches. and Jane Prentis was said to be practising witchcraft.
Also this eye we keep seeing, on the book shelves, tattooed on Gerard Keys himself and the painting in his mum's house all of an open eye. Cant also forget in MAG 9 - a farthers love, the pendant of the hand with the closed eye. and the connection to 'the peoples church of the divine host'. Perhaps there is 2 different witch cults, one with the open eye one with the closed eye?

Interesting about two witch cults, hasn't really occurred to me. I thought that eyes were a general symbol of protection in paganism, or something? Maybe I'm getting confused, though.

I had a patient recently with eyes tattooed onto his knees.... unfortunately he was unconscious and intubated, and unable to tell me what they meant to him.

the symbol of an eye is widely used to ward off evil, although it's more of a feature in Greek and Turkish culture than in paganism. I can't think of any contemporary pagan tradition that uses an eye as a central symbol (but that doesn't mean there isn't one). I'm a practicing thelemite and have friends in various pagan movements and with the exception of the eye in the triangle, eyes don't come up much.

Practicing some old school thread necromancy because I'm tripping over my own red string and my tinfoil hat's starting to chafe. Also I have an assignment due, and I can't face writing a tutorial teaching people how to use tumblr right now.
This is one of my favourite episodes because it has that wonderful feeling of M.R James about it. Not just for the M.R James, of course - this is it's own special thing. But there's that sense of academic curiosity overcoming common sense, as well as mysterious tombs and terrifying pursuers. Lucky for him that coin got stolen. I've also got a massive soft spot for the setting - I've always wanted to go to the Schwartzwald.
The scene with Johan's steps also reminds me of Count Magnus, especially with the priest-led posse.
"Are you awake, Count Magnus?"

The scene with Johan's steps also reminds me of Count Magnus I just finished reading this and I can definitely see what you mean! On the subject of MAG23, the eyes in the tomb should be added to the recurring themes section of the wiki by whomsoever is responsible for that, in my humble opinion. They seem to be the open kind, and their presence here seems very significant.

Feel free to edit the wiki if you see anything missing/incorrect, I'm happy to have outside help

Ah, of course! I remembered your Inquisition avatar, just not —at 4am anyway— your username. And thanks, I'll be happy to help the wiki if I can, it's a very good resource.

Did anyone else pick up that von Closen married a Kaey? If there isn't a door symbology-laden prophecy at some point I'll be very disappointed...
