Familiar names all around in today's episode as we revisit some things first mentioned all the way back in MAG #4... It seems the case for the scattered library of Jurgen Leitner is picking up a fairly healthy roster of interested parties. And if reading a book can change the reader, how does the reader also change the book, since Dominic Swain's copy seemed to be missing a woodcut? I have to say, personally, this is one my favourite threads - occult & mysterious books have a distinguished pedigree in horror (a storied history, if you will  ) and are veritable treasure troves of inspiration, coupled with the quest/pursuit of dark & forbidden knowledge. Thoughts? Connections? Where will the red string take us next I wonder... |

I won’t lie, when Crew’s name was mentioned, I fist-pumped, so I’m happy I wasn’t in public So, if Crew returned the Boneturner’s Tale to Chiswick library the year before arriving in Chichester, we possibly have a home town and a university town? I think it’s pretty safe to assume that Ex Altiora is what lead to Kirsten losing her balance, which is a nice detail, even if it makes her leaving it to Knox look like the gesture of a petty ex XD Swaine in MAG4 describes the lightning scar as being on Crew’s back, not face/neck. It could be a large pattern spanning the two areas, but the fact remains that it’s possible he’s not only had two encounters with this figure… Now, the question is, did the storms following him around predate his encounter at age 8? The last line, realising that the “Lichtenburg figure” is, well, a figure, gave me goosebumps, for sure… Just when we think we’re figuring out what’s going on, Mr Sims pulls the rug out from under us (which is certainly the best way of reconciling the different pulls of mystery and horror that he was worried about in the Q&A!) |

...since Dominic Swain's copy seemed to be missing a woodcut? I thought Dominic's copy had the woodcut of the Lichtenberg figure? It was Michael's that didn't? What an interesting episode! I recall that back when someone made the connection between two Michael Crows I wrote it off as the Jonny (the writer) accidentally making two trivial characters with the same name. But, no. I was wrong, and delighted to be so! This was a really interesting one as it draws together a few cases: MAG 4, 17 and this one. Michael has obviously been on the hunt for some time, and owned The Bone Turner's Tale for some time, before getting rid of it, weather or not he wanted to. It also shows that it's not just Gerard Key who is after the Leitners, but others too. I don't think that Michael and Gerard are related or are working together, because Michael kept Ex Altiora, whereas Gerard destroyed it. Maybe Michael was trying to get some protection or something, but Gerard is trying to destroy the books? It's hard to say. I'm not sure if the figure that was chasing Michael wasn't a Boneturner, y'know. Did anyone else get that impression? Maybe Jared coming back for some revenge? |

So I'm new around here, so please excuse me while I hang up all of this red string that seems to have been delivered to me upon signing up, but...
Anyone else get the impression that the reason the Lichtenberg figure was present in Dominic's copy was because Michael trapped it there? Seems to me that Michael has been running scared of this thing ever since he was hit by lightning( the entity itself maybe?) all of those years ago and has been searching for something to stop it. And he finally succeeded with Ex Altiora!
And perhaps it wasn't so random that Dominic came across the book? Perhaps someone was looking for a little payback for being forced to play in a thunderstorm all of those years ago!

Yeah, I think you might be on to something there: it's possible that Michael managed to seal the entity that was chasing him in the book, I might have to listen to Page Turner again to hear the description of that engraving.
Begs the question what happened to Michael. Did he survive or get sucked into the book?

Something else interesting: Dominic Swain couldn't read Ex Altiora because it was in latin, but the chap here didn't have any problems. Could it be that the book appears readable to only certain people?

Being an older gent with a classical education who deals in old books, his Latin is probably just better than your average lighting technicians'. |

I agree with Oneiros about the book episodes being some of the best ones. The idea of books being keys to unlock some great mystery or other world gives me such a pleasing terror.
I wonder if this Lichtenberg figure is related to Ivo Lensik'sfather in MAG 8. I googled Lichtenberg figures to see what it looked like and read that they are somehow connected to fractals. I remember Ivo Lensik's father was obsessed with fractals before he died and that his death was somewhat mysterious. I also seem to remember fractals coming up in a later episode but can't remember which one.
As usual I can't wait for next week's episode.

It seems to me this case file might lend more creedence to the notion that the Michael from MAG 26 (The one who offered Sasha help against the Hive) is in fact whatever Michael Crew has turned into after encountering various Leitner books.

Ooh ooh ooh this I like! Also, Ivo Lensik's father started having his paranoid delusions about the man with "all the bones in his hands" around the time that Crew had ownership of The Bonetuner's Tale, in about 2008!
I *knew* them having the same name wouldn't be coincidence!

Listening to A Distortion, Michael is described as "tall, blonde and monster", so doesn't quite mesh with our description of Crew, though that wouldn't be the least of the changes The Boneturner's Tale is capable of. Also: Sasha seems to get the idea that Michael makes no illusion that Michael isn't his real name. Also, the fact that Michael offer his assistance of saving Jonathan, Martin and Tim's life by name, and not Sasha, breaks my heart  |
