We're following up on old cases as Section 31 drops by the Archives again, this time in the form of Alice 'Daisy' Tonner who comes bearing a tape and jangling a number of keys. There's a lot to be disturbed by in this episode, not least the somewhat questionable behaviour of the police - even if this does validate our favourite incongruous tramp to a certain degree. And just what role do Breekon and Hope play in all of this, especially now that we have a more detailed physical description of them? And let's not forget that stairs go two ways... Today's episode guest starred the fantastic spoken word performer, Fay Roberts - you can check her out on Twitter (@fayroberts) or see how she's faring with NaPoWriMo (30 poems in 30 days) over at fayrobertsnapowrimo.blogspot.co.uk/

Really enjoyed this episode - both the juxtaposition of the mundane with the paranormal (Jonathan's reaction to the threat of broken bones made me laugh out loud) and managing to work out what was in the van from the time frame and the noise before seeing it specifically. Relistening for the exact date now - wonder if they were heading south or north maybe to or from Edinburgh? This statement takes place about 4-5 years after the events of MAG 2, and 7 years before B&H's liquidation, so no leads on origin or destination, really.
An interesting point - As we're seeing more and more links between the Fishmarket Six and Breekon and Hope... I wonder if "John" from MAG 2 and "Tom" from this episode also disappeared from somewhere. There was a John Fellows that went missing, but he disappeared in 2010, well after MAG 2.

I know the taxidermy chap had some ties to B&H, but Sarah didn't seem to? This was a great one, mostly because it brought my favourite episode, MAG 2: DO NOT OPEN, back into the rest of the series. Interesting that this is 5 years after MAG 2. Strange that they've been carting it around all this time. I wonder who screamed in MAG 2 when B&H picked up the coffin? I assumed it was John, but this Tom seems a lot like him. As Dominic met him when he was high as a kite, I wonder if he misheard the name. I'll have to relisten. Still begs the question who screamed? I assumed it was John, but if it was just a set of stairs into the coffin, and Isaac in this one didn't scream after he descended, what caused the scream in MAG 2? It didn't sound like the scream of someone falling down some stairs...

I was so happy to see MAG2 come back again! I'd sort of expected that episode to remain mostly a mystery, serving only as a way to introduce Breekon and Hope, but I should have known better.
I suppose it's as good a time as any for my wild, baseless guess. What if the stairs lead into the tunnels under the archive and the moaning-singing is coming from whatever was messing with Jonathan's chalk arrows during his excursion down there? Maybe the coffin was how someone got into the archive unnoticed to kill Gertrude. Maybe they got into the tunnels via the coffin.
It's early for me, I can't promise that any of this sounds the least but reasonable. Even for the completely evidense-less thought that it is.

The coffin moans because it's hungry...
Okay, maybe that's not true, but it certainly is the freakiest explanation I can think of. MAG02 is still one of my favourite all-time episodes, and I loved revisiting it. I know Daisy is meant as a one-off but, just like Lydia's character, I can't help but hope that she comes back eventually. I get so attached to all the characters doing their statements "in person".
Also, as John says, it was nice to get confirmation that vampires are a thing from someone with a bit more credibility. Something of a subversion of most horror tropes, the cops in this 'verse are extremely competent while dealing with paranormal threats. An entire system set up for something that happens 5 times in 9 years? American cops would never. It makes me wonder, though... If they have things like this set up to deal with something so undocumented as vampires, why did it take so long to snag Prentiss? Is something stopping them? Do they just think too logically to unravel the mysteries in the hymn of the hive?
Is it because that would ruin the main conceit of the story?
Usually, I hate cops in media, but I wanna know about the Sectioned so badly.
Also it started raining at the beginning of my lunch break, literally three seconds after I started the episode.

Upon a second listen, the end of the episode made me wonder if Mr. Sims has any intention of challenging himself with writing an episode in which a vampire gives a statement. If he can pull it off it would potentially be very interesting an unique. Or a very funny April Fools episode for next year.

I keep thinking about how this would work, and all I can think is that one of them (probably John, but it would be even more freaky if it was, say, Elias) would have to 'translate' for a vamp that had them under thrall. Creepy.

I was just thinking long sections of dead air with background noise. Occasionally punctuated with the Archivist responding to whatever the vampire has "said". It would be an interesting exercise in seeing how much of the vampire's story could be conveyed to the audience just through one character's reactions to it.

I like the way that vampires are portrayed in this series but I don't want to see this become a vampire story. Part of why I like them is that they are novel.
I also liked the fact that the coffin was revisited, I suspect that it might come back again, come on a staircase that leads to... way to enticing.

So I have a theory...
Mag 2 - Do not open 2 red faced delivery men came to Joshua Gellespie's flat and delivered the coffin. described as over 6ft tall and very imposing.
Mag 24 - Strange Music A neighbour described 2 people taking the Calliope piece by piece out of the house. she said they looked legitimate and thought Leanne Denikin was having furniture removed.
Mag 44 - Tightrope Yuri had 2 huge men in overals pick him up easily and talked fast crude Russian, with their words shifting back and forth between them.
Mag 54 - Still life Alexander heard Daniel speaking to 2 delivery men with 'obnoxious cockney voices' who spoke about unloading a van.
Mag 61 - Hard Shoulder Detective Alice Stopped a van with 'breekon and hope' written on it, she described 2 men as huge, hard faces like a pair of stone statues, dressed in overalls and flat caps, speaking back and forth in cockney accents so strong she thought they might be fake.
I think these guys are the same Russian men spoken about in Tightrope... not sure if this has been discussed before?
this connects the Fishmarket 6 with Breekon and hope AND the Russian Circus. (makes sence as the tiger was in the taxidermy shop window)
(not sure how it fits in but B&H were also mentioned in MAG 20 as they delivered the yellow stole to the church, so Edwin Burrows is connected possibly. And also they delivered the lighter and table to the archives but I cant remember what statement that happened in) [EDIT: Mag 36, Thanks Cannon ]

(Also, you might want to include MAG 36... )

Great minds indeed! As an aside, this theory is my third signature prediction - it's also the one I'm most confident about! ^.^ Not that 1 is particularly unlikely...
