Welp, time to shut everything down, the ghost is in the machine after all as the strange influences that abound reveal... something haunts the less travelled parts of the Internet. Is this why some statements can't be recorded by computer? Just what is the nature of the information in the statements? (On a personal note, Tessa's lovely technobabble at the beginning was fantastic as someone who did use to have tape drive storage ) An interesting take here on the 'operator in the wires' kind of techno-urban myth, particularly in the reactions it elicits from the Archivist for having entered a world/field that he is out of his depth with. And yet... And what about that showdown and its rather hefty dose of righteous confusion... Thoughts on 'why', anyone?

I really enjoyed the session at the end - it's always nice to get a reminder that the team have their own feelings and emotions beyond that extrapolated by the Archivist. I particularly enjoyed Tim's vehemence - very believable!
I find it strange that the opening of this statement appears to go to such lengths to point out that "tape and computers are both digital storage". I like to think that that's Jonny throwing us a bone by letting us know we've been getting the analogue vs. digital thing wrong for a while now.
Also, masterstroke by the Archivist to locate a tech-savvy paranormalist!

Other thoughts - was expecting the Archivist to tell Tim not to trust him or anyone else - sort of a "solidarity in paranoia"!
This whole "not being able to leave" thing seems super ominous... and the spotlight of suspicion swings back to Elias...
I also forgot what Samwise's IRL degree was in from the last time it came up, so I thought the PhD student doing one in Computer Manifestations might have been another reference xD

Didn't catch many connections in this episode but enjoyable nonetheless. Does Tim also realize Sasha is not-Sasha? Or maybe I read too much into that pause.
I definitely noted the "tape recorders are digital" comment, and started racking my brain for other differences between tape recorder and computer recordings... came up blank.
I wonder if the maze imagery connects this with any of the other labyrinthine lore?

Typed out a whole theory post and then my crap mobile Internet flushed it down the drain.
I even made a gender binary joke in the beginning; it was brilliant and you should all be very sad I'm not going to make it twice.
Sum up of theories, as I'm v sleepy: Am an idiot for not realizing the Archive was one of those malevolent living buildings earlier. Could not put 2 and 2 together. Am rather curious about what revelations of the archivists being collections of the Institute means for Martin in particular. He is the calm, accepting one of the group, and we have no proof that the Archive can alter feelings and emotions, just actions.
However.
It's possible that the Archive's influence spreads with time spent in its walls, in which case it very well may be puppeting Martin around.
Or, you know, he's the bad guy and my heart will be crushed forever.
(Also, am not convinced this implicates Elias. How far does this malevolent influence reach?)

I liked this episode a lot and I like the techy twist for a change, but I do want to register one bit of feedback.
I really enjoyed the guest this week, she did a great job, but I personally greatly prefer the solo Jonny episodes. Is it just me?

I really enjoyed the guest this week, she did a great job, but I personally greatly prefer the solo Jonny episodes. Is it just me? Personally, I disagree. I think having other narrators makes the episode more fresh. Some aren't good (see Crusade), but I thought this one was well played and engaging. Jonathan is a really engaging narrator, but I think we need a break from his dulcet tones every once in a while. However, if we could have every episode narrated by Gertrude I'd be more than happy! Having finally listened to this episode, I enjoyed it, but can't help but feel like it's massively out of place. We've not had any tech-ghosts before, and I can't see it tying in to any of the other arcs. Unless it's an UNCANNY DIMENSION, maybe. That being said, this was a really nice and creepy episode. The fact that she had to watch a whole episode of someone eating a computer for 17 hours was just unsettling. And of course, the confrontation with Tim at the end solidifies that everyone in the Archives is there for a purpose, or is kept there for some longer purpose. AND WHAT'S ON GERTRUDE'S LAPTOP?! Oh my god I wanna know so bad! A whole episode of Jonathan Sims reading Gertrude Robinson's emails would be perfect, imo. *In Jonathan Sim's voice* Mmm... BT have been in touch with Gertrude several times regarding... High. Speed. Broadband. I'll have to ask Martin to look into this further.

I noticed that this is the third (?) time we've heard about someone compulsively eating something (Graeme was observed tearing out and eating the pages of one of his many notebooks before he became Not-Graeme, Father Burroughs' gruesome "host.").
Spooky flat mate also Natalie seemed quite keen to get her friend eating something unpleasant in the name of "worshipping," though we've still not really worked out what it was.

This one's interesting partly because it doesn't really feel like a TMA episode, thematically. It strikes me as somewhere between classic x-files and Kairo in tone (which is a good thing) and while the idea of a geocities era creepypasta come to life is kind of silly, being haunted by a 17hr long cursed video is a creepy concept and the imagery is pretty unsettling. It works, it just feels a little out of place, so I guess I'm agreeing with Spooniermist in a long-winded way.
Having been around since the early internet, though, this is so credible as an online urban legend it actually made me feel kinda nostalgic.

I'm confused which Samwise IRL you mean? in Magnus world? or me?
Magnus Sam is working on a PHD in Manifestations, not sure if that is specifically Manifestations in Technology (MAG 33)
IRL Sam has a Degree in Marine Biology and Zoology and currently helps build wind farms in Scotland... I think Magnus Sam has a much cooler job, but she cant seem to leave it for some strange reason!!
Apologies for not keeping up with TMA and Rusty Quill in general, I'm currently catching up.
I snorted rather loudly at Sims trying his hardest not to say 'rambling' at the beginning.
spooniermist you mentioning ' everyone in the Archives is there for a purpose, or is kept there for some longer purpose' for some reason made me think of Cabin in the Woods. like they are all some sacrifice for something greater.

Isn't it wonderful that this confusion can exist? I don't recall what I was referring to - a) Magnus Sam's PhD is in Manifestations in Technology and this is a reference to IRL Sam's degree (apparently not!) b) The student with a degree in Manifistations in Technology is a reference to some other listener's degree c) It's all just part of the narrative. Also, nice to see you back!

Could you explain a bit more, as I'd always wondered what happened to the poor guy in#3; how does he end up relating to Father Burroughs?
