This one thoroughly creeped me out. And not just because of my arachnophobia. Very nicely done on the imagery, the nature of recognising horror - which stands in contrast to last week's statement-giver - and the very believable cover-up from the university. As for the experiment getting ethical sign-off, I wonder if the University's patrons or the Ethics Board might have some familiar names on them...
I'm guessing the number of people shouting at the Archivist for going to go exploring on his own is rather high - though that supplemental did sound rather folorn, almost like it's no longer about 'trust'.
So, more spiders... And possibly another figure like the one Trevor encountered in Manchester. There's a tag on tumblr doing the rounds which seems very appropriate here: #What Do The Spiders Want
Thoughts? I, for one, am not sure I want to find out...

I'm pretty much going to repeat what I said on the subreddit... I'm firmly in the pro-spider camp so this episode didn't scare me as such, but it did give me an idea about the spiders we've encountered so far.
My theory, still very much in development, is that the spiders (both in this episode and in File #16 with the one haunting Carlos Vittery) are some sort of embodiment of fear itself. This would explain the manifestation of spiders around arachnophobes, as well as the cobwebs appearing below the archives which coincide with Jonathan's increasing fear of what lies beneath.
The problem with that theory is Hill Top Road and Raymond Fielding, neither of which seem to have been associated with fear before the spiders showed up. However, it's entirely possible that the entity which Father Burroughs encountered at the house was haunting Fielding long before, which in turn could have caused the arrival of spiders.
It's occurred to me as I'm writing this that the arachnophobia/spider link could also be the work of a heretofore unseen foe (or possibly one of the background players who has already been mentioned) who is capable of bringing a lot more fears to life. Laura and Aleana Popham's cave exploration in #15, Paul McKenzie's nighttime intruder in #27, Andrea Nunis getting lost in Genoa in #48, in fact a lot of the more 'standalone' cases we've heard relate to fairly common fears being brought to life... now that I've written that I realise that this is pretty much the object of all horror storytelling so ignore me, I'm just tied up in red string.
Sidenote: Did anybody catch where this sits on the timeline? I wasn't at all clear on the date of the events.

Sidenote: Did anybody catch where this sits on the timeline? I wasn't at all clear on the date of the events. Statement given 18th Nov 2010 and Darren Harlow talks about Annabelle Cain's "episode" occurring the previous Thursday, which is 11th November. (I've just typed up the transcript so details are reasonably fresh for me )

As for the experiment getting ethical sign-off, I wonder if the University's patrons or the Ethics Board might have some familiar names on them... "Do you want to push the boundaries of science? Know things that man was never meant to know? Hampered by pesky ethics committees and a lack of funding from dull fools who fail to recognise your genius? Call the Lukas Family now! We will happily fund your horrendous experiments and pay for the subsequent clean up. Applicants must supply their own test subjects." As well as them being (in part) behind the experiments in MA:57, I'm pretty sure they were involved in the mosquito stuff in MA:45 as well. #whatdothespiderswant? At this point, who knows. At first they seemed a little more benign than the Flesh Hive (only striking Carlos because he shot first, so to speak) and now...I'm very sure it's not pleasant.

Did anybody catch where this sits on the timeline? I wasn't at all clear on the date of the events. Sorry about this, I'm in a villiage in rural Nottinghamshire, haven't had much chance to update the wiki! Incidentally, while I listened to this while walking along a dual carriageway, I usually listen to MAG when walking to work. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to work out the University whose campus I pass through - and who works at the nearest hospital with an MRI scanner... D:
