OR: "Family Fortunes"
The soap opera continues and there will be no respite for Hamid, as the emotions continue to flow. Although we do find time to wax philosophical as his snazzy new robes help illuminate a discussion about the nature of sorcerers. Plus a bonding moment for Sasha and Grizzop as children of the underground. And we get our first viewing of the el Tahan family manor, as well as pretty solid indications that there will be as much guilt as there is gilt in this place And Sasha extols the virtues of Bags of Holding, from a purely practical point of course. But how much of Hamid's adventures in recent times is going to come out? And does saving the world balance out getting sent down from university? The prodigal son has indeed returned... Also, the references were flowing thickly in this one, not to mention the sheer joy of hearing Azu react to the various gossipy revelations. Can't believe it's taken 87 episodes to get a "You're not a wizard, Hamid" crack in, though. And kudos to anyone who does get the reference to a now-defunct British sketch comedy group of our acquaintance - let me know in the comments if you did

The ending of the episode nearly brought me to tears. And I am not known for crying when watching movies, seeing sad plays or reading emotional books, but you guys did it.
And I really want to find out how it happend that Hamid is a descended from one of the Meritocrats. I can imagine that even his parents do not know this.
And Helen's reaction to the revelation (for her) of Hamid getting thrown out of university is hilarious.
How do you guys do it that one episode can be such an emotional rollercoaster?

It was weird recording the Q+A after this episode. Cos there was the question about if we ever get emotional enough that we need to break from recording. This is as close as we get in general.

I can imagine that. I don't think I would have been able to go on after that for a while. But thanks goodness there where some lighthearted moments at the beginning.

You know there're all the feels when player and GM both need hugs! *offers two cuddly blankets and a nice pot of tea* Fat Kitten is a cute name for a comedy show, are there any recordings beside the Fat Kitten vs Student Improv Nottingham clips on YouTube left? (Reminds me that I wanted to watch this for some time and forgot again ) And the more I hear about the goblins the more I want to know! It sounds as if they're very ostracized by society in general. Makes me wonder whether Grizzop is an exception with his morals or values or whether goblins are victims of social stigmatization (as many people were).

Yeah, Goblins in this world seem to have the same rough handling by society like Goblins have on the discworld. They are actually super cool, but nobody likes them and force them to live out of sight.

I know our very own Oneiros filmed quite a bit of our stuff, but I don't think it ended up online anywhere.

Listening to Azu catch up via snippets of gossip and very much a telephone game of story telling through Grizzop's retelling of pre-Prague adventures and now her delight in gossip about Hamid's lineage genuinely made me laugh loud enough to wake the sleeping toddler in the next room while listening. While my heart is absolutely breaking for poor Hamid and his entire family, I must admit that Azu has made me love this new group as it forms even in the middle of awkward tragedy. It makes my nerdy little heart so pleased to know I'm not alone in believing that beings of orcish heritage should not all be played with the stereotype of stupid and slow even if they are inherently tank-like.

Absolutely! One of the main reasons I chose an orc was to flip that stereotype on its head (on re-listening, her voice is so much posher than mine!). Azu can definitely be naive though, as I'm sure you'll soon find out.

Currently writing an orc mafia for the game I run for my teens. Azu just makes me so happy because she's rather coming across as a much taller version of myself (yes, pink platemail and all thank you). Thank you for playing my favorite new orc!

Grizzop leaping to the realisation that Hamid must be decended from a Meritocrat and then quickly stopping to check dragon taxonomy with a “random street sweeper” was possibly my favourite bit of the episode. Ben has really been on it for these past few episodes!
I am so worried for Hamid. After Liliana’s betrayal I don’t think he would cope if his family ALSO assumed he was responsible for everything bad that had happened throughout LOLOMG’s adventures.
(On a completely different note, I am intrigued by the prospect of running a RPG for one’s teens/tweens. I would like to learn more about that...)

Ben has really been on it for these past few episodes! Yeah Ben is really on it in the last episodes. He is the one who gives all the grief things a bit of comic relief. So as a listener I can still get a laugh in and do not feel like crying all the time.

Running a game for teens is not much different than one for adult players save that since I do so as a teacher of students with emotional and medical difficulties our schedule only allows for 2 hours of game time every other week. I started playing tabletop games when I was a tween myself and was DMing by the time I entered high school. Now I use Pathfinder for the group I work with (ages 14 - 19 mostly) and my oldest son at home is asking to learn and have a game for children his age so I may soon be running one for younger ages. In general the rule I stick to is keeping the tween/teen plots lighter and more based on adventuring in the classic "seeking glory and treasure" sense rather than plots with political or heavy themes.

I've been considering bumping my Patreon support up a level for a while now, and this episode was the kicker. Shows that make me laugh get my fannish enthusiasm, shows that make me tear up get my money. All the hugs for Hamid (and Bryn, if necessary!), and I look forward to more of his interactions with his family with anticipation and worry in even measure. You're all suffering, guys; please be kind to your little black sheep/brass lizard of the family.
