I was relistening to MAG 23: Schwartzwald (at a guess, this would be the fourth or fifth time?) and something was bugging me about Johann von Württemburg.
Obviously we know little and less about him, but for the fact that he "consorted with witches" and has a link to the open-eye symbology later seen by the Keays (for obvious reasons) but it was only on this listen that something hit me - Johann von Württemburg seems to have a similar feel to it to Jurgen Leitner (I don't know how to describe it beyond that, was really just a gut feeling).
I pursued this some more, and while "von Württemburg" comes from the name of the Württemburg mountain in modern Germany (a literal translation of von Württemburg could be "of Mt. Württem", if you'll pardon the bastardization), the interesting thing is the etymology of Leitner - it's a (usually) German translation of the Jewish for "mountain dweller".
Now, I would normally put this down to coincidence, but there are subtle clues that give me pause - Johann von Württemburg's tomb is full of books, which draw parallels to Leitner's library. The man that confronts von Closen near the crypt says "You have nothing to fear from the dead" in such a way that it makes me wonder if von Württemburg really is dead. And there's the fact that the book found by von Closen is in Arabic, and the Leitner book owned by Mary Keay is written in Sanskrit.
Little parallels, but my working theory is that Leitner is in fact an alias of Johann von Württemburg. Gerard Keay is either working for or against his ancestor (the open eye symbology makes me think for) when he's keeping an eye open (pardon the pun) for Leitner books.

Holy crap! You might be on to something there. Thing is, we've discovered that Leitner is Scandinavian, from 'Page Turner'. However, the other parallels are uncanny. I wonder if maybe Leitner is another descendent of von Württemburg, maybe as some of them went to the UK, some went to Scandinavia?
Really good spot, though! So, Jurger and Gerard may be cousins, or something, or at least related somehow.

And the Scandinavian link then hearkens back to 'Ny-Alesund' and the point brought up in last week's ep about the name of the first mate being more traditional in Norwegian.
