We're back, scrabbling in the depths of the Season 1 mailbag for more of your questions on the Erasing the Line campaign. This week we look at the characters, their development and then segue into a long chat about gaming systems. Which could very easily have turned into a full episode all of its own. Plus, we attend to the very important matter of Brutor and expanding the remit of Handle Animal to now include Instill Ethical Reasoning...

I really enjoyed these Q+A episodes. Both recording them and listening to them again. You don't always get the chance to analyse the campaign you're playing in, and this was a really fun chance to discuss it and look at stuff from a slightly different perspective. I also just love chatting with all these people.

Another interesting episode! I really enjoyed listening to everyone talk about their characters - how intentions don't always match what eventually plays out. Also listening to what sort of skillsets people bring to the game - I remember reading people's bios on the websites ages ago, and had managed to forget that most of you are performers...making me feel somewhat better about my own tabletop RP, in that it certainly doesn't flow as smoothly. I think emphasising this and the editing process is great for people who may be starting out in tabletop and are wondering why it doesn't work out the same way.
Ben's comment about larp costuming made me laugh. Custom chain mail (for those who are mad enough to wear it) is insanely expensive. Good thinking.

Any kind of LARP costuming is mad - I remember a housemate getting a set of full plate and me basically having to squire for him to get it on!

Then again, I never play combat roles (darn RSI). Leather armor tends to be more of a thing over here. /thread hijack

This episode made a lot of good points that as a GM of an online game, I felt like I should take note of. The talking over, the flow, the keeping notes on things said . . . I love it. Had multiple laughs, enjoyed the humor, and I will HAPPILY sit and listen to you guys discuss pros and cons of different gaming mechanics.
When Exalted was mentioned I thought how awesome that would be . . . Followed by the same thought on the rules.

I have a difficult relationship with Exalted, I hugely respect what it does as a system, and how flavourful its (many) elements are. The idea of stunting (describing your actions in exchange for a mechanical bonus) and Intimacies (positive and negative relationships which can be leveraged to help/hinder you) are utterly wonderful and should probably be in every system. However I just struggle to enjoy it, as someone who doesn't enjoy maths. The sheer amount of calculation necessary to play a game of Exalted throws up a huge barrier to people not willing/able to deal with a wall of numbers and the level of admin required to stay on top of your charms feels (to me) a lot more like work than any game has a right to be.

Same. I love the flavour of Exalted, it's a marvellous sandbox to play around in (especially the Heavenly politics of the Sidereals) and I have a lot of time for the writers/designers of Exalted 3E. But it is definitely Accountancy: the En-dicening, even more so than how Pathfinder/D&D 3.5E has ended up. I really wish that they had come up with a new way to make things epic and expansive without it basically being "you add more dice". I just wish there were a different set of mechanics I could port it to without it losing too much of what makes it Exalted.
