I am so happy we finally released this. We recorded it a very long time ago, and it's a pleasure to finally get to listen to it. This is the first one off we ever recorded iirc, so you can already see the patterns of silly accents, wonderful characters and Alex Newall being the worst that we've all come to know and love. I think this was a really cool adventure that seanfsmith wrote and ran. The time skip in the opening scene was so disorienting to us, in the perfect way. I imagine there were several minutes of us just being confused that got cut. The creepiness really started to ramp up as the scenario went on, I hope you're all looking forward to next week's conclusion.

I'm so glad this has gone out! I loved running it & it's great to listen back.
I'm hanging about to answer any questions if they arise!

Apologies again Sean. We tried to introduce it into the feed about 4 times previously to this and every time something came along to muck it up. Glad it's finally being dragged kicking and screaming into the daylight.

I've actually been thinking about running a Trail of Cthulhu game for a little bit now, so it was cool to hear a game of it.

regiskobalos, do you have any fears or reservations about running Trail?

I would need to learn the rules first, which I would not have time to do until the middle of May, but, beyond that, I'd be good for it.

I loved this one! Muriel's my favourite this time around. I'm very fond of the King in Yellow. Ran a larp based on it once, although that was somewhat traumatic.
Equal parts (probably unintentionally) hilarious and creepy. comment about the Irish in 1945 and then the disappearing naked woman had me giggling. Looking forward to the next one, especially seeing as how one of the characters is already on 0 stability and 2 sanity.

I might PM you if you're serious - it's a long, long story and I have an awful tendency to hijack threads

Cut + paste what I said to Sean, with some edits. Talking about this game makes me re-live the trauma of running it.
The scenario, which I bought from a website, had an excellent premise: some people are trying to make a horror movie, end up in Carcosa because of Plot and Reasons. Something bad is going to happen if various things do not happen in time. You can lose sanity, memories, parts of yourself. All very excellent so far. The various inhabitants of Carcosa are played by NPCs, and I lucked out with crew who were experienced and made the most fantastic costumes. They had a much harder time than the players, since they were responsible for creating most of the atmosphere* and remembering the lore and various tasks. It's a very talk-y game. Everything that is supposed to happen is mostly dialogue so there aren't many props.
I try to be constructive in my criticism, but I really was cursing the writer by the end because this thing managed to be fairly freeform (You get to workshop your own characters - character sheets have a vague set up and a series of questions the player answers) and then massively mechanically heavy at the same time. There is so much setting material, so much complexity, that actually running the thing was a nightmare. I ran it twice, although the second time with help, and it honestly both times I just started to make things up that sounded right, which seems thematically appropriate if it was an actual nightmare.
130 pages of printing for a three-hour theatreform. Logistical. Hell. Formatting was all over the place.
Player reactions were pretty much "I had the best time" or "I am extremely confused." This had absolutely no correlation as to whether they were familiar with the source material or not. Crew had a great time regardless. The King in Yellow/Carcosa is a great setting for a larp, but this was not that larp for me. It had so much potential! Still not sure whether the reason this game was so hellish to run was me or the actual game or both.
I'm still finding character sheets and masks from that damn game and I ran it almost two years ago.
*The majority of NZ theatreforms take play in community halls and set dressing is "cover everything with fabric, turn the lights off and make spooky configurations with electronic candles."
