Successive statements covering the bases of what lies beneath but the entities encountered have somewhat different hungers... And we discover that rogue archaeology is not exactly as Lara Croft or Indiana Jones would have us believe. (Was very tempted to use "Tomb raider" as the alternative title here but figured that might be too obvious ) So we have another statement from Egypt and things in sandy places that straddle the line between life and death, preserved and entombed - but to what end? And what of the dice - simply a way of passing the time or a way of Passing the Time? But perhaps we can agree the saddest or most horrific thing here is the terrible state of academic funding that would lead to such excursions. At the boundaries, we all do what we must to survive. Or not, as the case may be...

Barry and Paul made me actually laugh out loud.
I think the obvious conclusion here is that this person is a avatar of Death - the whole "not dying" thing is a big clue, but the dice in the corner of the room really makes it obvious.
I also had to double check the date when the wooden sarcophagus was discovered, was wondering if we'd found the origins of the Gallespie coffin!

Barry and Paul made me actually laugh out loud. So, not just chuckle then? *tumbleweed* Yeah, I'll get my coat...

I said the same thing over on the Reddit discussion, but does anyone else suspect that "Starbo" might be an alias of Mikaele Salesa?

I wondered if one of them was, but didn't think there was enough info to be sure.
He's definitely a suspect, though!

I didn't find this one very scary, though I don't think fear was the point of this one. Mostly it was just sad. Immortality has always made me sad; I don't think the human brain is designed to put up with that much. The bit with the knife was almost too much for me to keep listening, and I did pause it to have a bit of a sob.
I know we've encountered immortal beings on the show before, and they were much more hands-on accounts of it. But, somehow, not getting an explanation of any kind from the mummy made it more visceral. All we had were its actions, and they were crystal clear.
It was such a sad episode.

I think this episode succeeded in tying two lines of red string into a nice knot, specifically MAG29 is previously stated with immortality and games of chance (which made me look up the first recorded instance of gambling, which just compounded the sense of horror from that mummy. Carved bone suspected to be marked as a very primitive form of dice has been found in Stone Age caves in France. Imagine an Avatar still around from then) and MAG43 which described a section 31 case that Ms Hussein found a person with a mess of a face from repeated self inflicted bullet wounds, who was inexplicably still alive, conscious, desperate to add more, and of course weeping. Not unlike our poor dried out friend. Another immortal desperate to not be anymore?
I agree with Aslee. The true horror of this episode is Man's inability to concept infinity tested to its limits.
PS that is totally Silesa. This shit is right up his junk filled alley.

A genuinely good, eerie mummy story . . . I'm as surprised as the Archivist would be if he actually believed it! Now, of course, I've got to go back and re-listen to the earlier episodes that people have brought up. Yes, on my own I probably *would* have missed the dice connection . . .
On a side note, I'm really pleased that the Archivist regaining enough equilibrium for his snarky side to come through again. The more serious, driven man we've met this season has been great character development, but it's nice to know that at least a little of the old Archivist has survived the Prentiss/Gertrude trauma.

Not what I thought would happen when they were discussing infinity. I thought that this would have been another building horror episode.
Also, props to Ben for getting my name right. Most people don't.

Of course, if there are more of them out there, there's no guarantee... It's not like there will be any less of them over time, will there?

Re-listening for timeline details, it occurs to me that the labyrinth only appearing to be disorienting when trying to leave is likely a way of keeping this mummy inside. The "straitjacket" that the mummy is wrapped in... it appears that the true villain in this story is a scared group of Egyptians. :/

So relistening to MAG43 states that she the suicide victim had a load of old fashioned domino sets in his flat, which to me heavily implies that he was another avatar. Perhaps not Mr Thorpe as I'm assuming this avatar won his immortality with that game.

What I wonder is whether this is an avatar who is employed, so to speak- ie they've won the game of dice - or whether this is sad confirmation of how things go for them once they lose a game and find themselves unemployed. The guy in #29 was still figuring out whether he aged or not now that he was human again - maybe he's in for a tough eternity?
