We look at borders and shady transactions this week, and examine what goes on in those grey areas between the legal and illegal, between facades and factfinding...
An interesting one this week as we get yet another container associated with our somewhat suspicious Polynesian 'antique dealer' friend and a somewhat claustrophobic experience with bonus temporal disorientation. From the description of the heat, as well, I'm put in mind of a 'brazen bull'-type device, which makes me wonder if this is punishment somehow? And I really can't blame Mr Wang from handing in his notice the next day - sometimes there are things too weird even for Customs Officers.
Plus we learn some of what Getrude was up to as the laptop yields details of her travels and her expenditures. Numbers may be a little dry but maybe they can act as red string as well... Plus the Archvist seems to returning to some semblance of his former self. Which is good, right? Or, after last week's outburst, has his paranoia just found a seeming ledge of stability in an ever-descending world of darkness and mystery?

I really enjoyed this one. A few thoughts:
* Is anyone else noticing a pattern of isolation? The box in this one, the space episode, the hallways. I'm not sure if it links with my UNCANNY DIMENSIONS! theory, but we'll see. * Not-Sasha can't use computers. As in, they break around her. It's been mentioned a few times that she keeps having computer problems, and this episode mentioned it again. Have we had any other people who can't use technology who might be a not-person too? Ooh! I wonder if that ties in to why these recordings won't be recorded onto computers. * Is anyone else starting to think that Gertrude might not be the good guy, here? I'm starting to wonder if the archives have to be neutral, and Gertrude wasn't being neutral, which was causing some problem in the unseen war.
Also, someone - I think CanonLongshot - guessed that grbookworm1818 was Gertrude. Looks like you were right, really good spot!

I noticed the 1818, guessing it was a link to the Archive - it was *trawls through posts* Samwise that guessed that it was GR specifically ^.^ I think the guess in my sig was that the Book of Solomon was in the Archive, but given that there may have been burnings I'm going to classify it as HALF-CONFIRMED. I tried something a little interesting this time - I listened to the episode while playing a horror video game - specifically Eternal Darkness. Won't be repeating the experience, as it kind of took me out of both stories, rather than intensifying the horror as I thought it might. The items Gertrude bought seem very specific to the types of entities that the Archives encounters - Petrol could be linked to the burning of Leitners, pesticides to the Hive and high-powered torches to combating the Montork darkness, or even exploring the catacombs below the Institute. Good idea re: Gertrude going rogue, spooniermist - though if that's the case you have to wonder why Elias signed off those purchases? Also - I imagine this taking place if we all read the title at the same time: Cannon: Okay, guys, we're going to look at the title and guess what it's about, okay? Spoonier: Okay! Aslee: Okay! Samwise: Sure! Kea: Right! Cannon: Okay, three, two, one... *reveals title* All: Salesa.

Didn't Jonathan confirm that none of those books are in the Archives, though? I imagine stuff doesn't come out of the archives very often. And, yeah, I did think Saleasaasaesa when I saw the title! I'm wondering if he's going to be involved in the climax of the season? He's been in it quite a lot recently.

I guarantee he would have confirmed the same about Gertrude's laptop before a few episodes ago

Yeah, accurate. I always get excited when certain titles show that certain "Friends of the Institute" may be turning up...and a surprise visit from Peter Lukas. Always fun. The bet was a nice touch - I like that sort of black humour. And Martin flubs it with a statement giver again. No degree* and he's still not very good at people. His tea must be pretty excellent.
So the big reveal is Gertrude's laptop. I agree with spooniermist - Gertrude's certainly not looking like "the good guy" any more. (As much as anyone could be said to be good in TMA) There's still the fact that she was shot rather than any of the other more esoteric methods of disposal. I agree with the point about her possibly "unbalancing" the very careful network of truces (?) in TMA. Still, she must have known it was catching up with her, otherwise she wouldn't have hidden her laptop.
*Although no one noticed until he pointed it out, so clearly it doesn't matter that much.

dropping in to say hi and thanks again for another fab episode. My red string is in knots. Work has been a bit busy and I'm costuming for Armageddon this weekend (comic con wellington style) but I'm still here!!!

. What I can't figure out is whether Gertrude is unbalancing the balance, or whether she was cleaning up the town, a la Clint Eastwood?
