I downloaded itunes just to leave a review so know nothing about it...
Is it better for you guys if we listen via itunes rather than the website?
Does downloading rather than just listening there help?
Is there anything else we can do (other than spread through word of mouth) that helps?

I'll have to let Alex field this one.

Listening on iTunes is the best way, as that's where they're counted. leaving a review and a rating on iTunes is also super-helpful. Most of the other podcast directories seem to take rankings from itunes, so if you want to be especially lovely, subscribing, listening, rating and reviewing there is the way to do it

Stupid question: can we only review once or can we review each episode?

Also, is it possible to upload it slightly louder? It seems quieter on itunes than on the web so that even with everything turned up as far I can it's a bit hard to hear on itunes.

Again, I'll have to bug Alex to get an answer to these questions, I think you can only review it once, but I know very little about the technical side of it all.

Hey all super techie to the rescue!
I'll try and go through everything in order: 1) The reason we prefer iTunes is because most people listen to podcasts via iTunes and many (but not all) podcast directories get their data from iTunes. This means a high ranking on iTunes is more visible than anywhere else. 2) The way that iTunes ranking works is a bit arcane but it takes into account the ratio of reviews to listeners and number of subscribers. The more those numbers increase over time the higher the ranking. 3) At this stage if anyone wants to help, word of mouth is the biggest factor. If you are able to subscribe via iTunes and leave us a written review on there it would be a big help. However, I took the time to add us to every directory that would take us so if you'd rather listen via another app or program go nuts! 4) Eventually it will help us more if people start to listen via the main Website but honestly there is still a lot of work to do before we get to that stage. 5)On iTunes, since iOS update 7 all podcasts have to be listened via the dedicated app (rather than as music) so I don't believe you can rate individual episodes although you can Facebook "like" individual episodes. When playing an episode hit the review tab and you should see a little hyperlink at the top. 6)Regarding upload volumes I will definitely take this on board. I have followed the recommended guidelines from iTunes for volume (Optimised for stereo headphones) but if this is too quiet its a simple job to boost it in future episodes. That said, we actually record episodes a few weeks in advance and it takes so much time to edit that I am not able to take the time to go back and re-edit old episodes. I will try to boost the volumes in future edits though. 7) Hope that helps. 8) Revels!
