Quite literally in this case, though not in the way the Backstreet Boys envisaged I imagine and not to the satisfaction of evidence-based researchers... Because it's all about ethics in paranormal investigation, after all Joking aside, a good eerie episode this week, playing to and subverting some very familiar tropes when it comes to the media presentation of the paranormal particularly for entertainment - a healthy dose of body horror (staple gun... *shudder*) coupled with being just meta enough to poke fun at the medium. And a nice cameo from Lydia in the Yvette Fielding role

I loved how sinicle and harsh Jon was to her! He really dosent like these kind of people, I would have thought anyone who would choose to work at the Magnus Institute would do it because they must have a slight belief in the Paranormal.
Great to hear Lydia on the Archives although I'm not sure we will hear her again, Sims dosent seem to make friends with many people coming to give statements.
Looks like Sims needs my handy dandy timeline and list of every character ever mentioned in the Statements, because Sarah Baldwin was one of the Angler Fish's victims, reported missing in August 2006. Oooooooh!! Prehaps the creature she was talking to is the Angler Fish? what on earth does it turn the people it captures into?
I just have the image of the cockroach from men in black in my head...

I kept expecting Lydia to describe the apparition moving like A million grains of sand sliding slowly down a mildy steep incline, or similar! I do love a good camo and I thought Lydia was pretty good as Melanie. This was a good one, I enjoyed the unsettling atmosphere and that Sarah was blatantly weird all along. The peeling of the skin, though, was unexpected and pretty nasty. We have heard of Sarah Baldwin before, way back in MAG 1, when she disappeared in Old Fishmarket Close in August 2006. It could be a coincidence, but probably not, knowing TMA up to this point. It seems like Sarah has some sort of connection with the hospital, but we know that she went missing from Edinburgh, so why would she know about a hospital in Cambridge? She certainly seemed freaked out when she arrived, maybe a family member died there? What was the smell of Sarah's perfume about? I don't really know what sort of thing dead bodies are given to stop them smelling, but I imagine it to be floral and with an acrid smell, any thoughts? And what the hell was up with her arm? Like, did she peel it back and get something? Or was there something there? I need to listen to it again, me thinks. I've note written up a post for the wiki yet, just not had time. Turns out getting married in less than a month (ARGH!) is stressful an time consuming, who knew!

Maybe it doesn't eat it's victims, but subverts them? Who knows. There seems to be a lot of mind-controlling things in TMA recently!

Perfume over formaldehyde could do that; think a kind of scented nail polish remover. Touch would be the main thing though - as someone who has handled preserved body parts (including brains), I can tell you that things coated/soaked in formaldehyde feel very plasticky. That said, a standard body wouldn't be treated with those sorts of chemicals unless specifically for long-term display/preservation.

Congrats on getting married! Thank god we haven't had a creepy Magnus statement on a marriage yet so at least you don't need to worry about that I think the skin on her arm got dislodged when she got thrown accross the room (prehaps twisted?) so she peeled it off so she could adjust it back to normal.

I don't know why but I have the thought the floral smell could be posies. You said the acrid smell could be formaldehyde, well they usually use posies for funerals because the sweet smell is used to cover up the smell of formaldehyde. Also during the Black Plague a "pocket full of posies" was carried around by people to cover up the smell of decay and death. Slight tinfoil hat moment... Sorry.

After listening to MAG 01 I've noticed an interesting correlation - smoking. Sarah Baldwin smoked, Nathan Watts (the subject giving the statement) smoked and the Angler Fish asked him for a cigarette. When Nathan went back the next day to check out the ally in daylight, he found an unsmoked Marlboro Red on the ground and noticed that the student who went missing had a Marlboro Red pack poking out of his pocket.
I think that Sarah's chain smoking was an attempt to mask the smell of whatever was happening with her, whatever the Angler Fish does to people. It's interesting that the other two known encounters with this thing also involved smoking. I think this Angler Fish creature takes over people, makes them "drones" or something like that. Although Sarah did seem to have some Autonomy, was seen arguing/pleading with it and was seen walking around in public in the daytime by other people, albeit still giving off a creep vibe.
I love all these little connections!

*Lights a cigarette* I promise I'm not an angler fish. ...yet I feel Magnus is the kind of show where nearly every assertion of the negative just begs the corollary '... yet'.
